3. U.S.A. involvement
  • Many Latin Americans feared the European
    countries would try to reconquer (take over) the
    new nations. The United States also feared the
    Europeans would try to come back and reclaim the
    lands to the south.

What is the Monroe Doctrine?
  • Therefore, in 1823 President James Monroe issued
    a statement saying,
  • the American continentsare henceforth NOT to be
    considered subjects for future colonization by
    ANY European powers.
  • This statement became known as the Monroe
    Doctrine.

What does that mean????
  • The U.S.A. president was therefore saying that
    once countries won or were granted independence
    in the Americas, they could NOT be re-colonized!

  • If European countries try to re-colonize, the
    U.S.A. will help Latin American countries fight.
