3. BACKGROUND - 1
  • Income increase from the shrinking agricultural
lands, particularly in low-lying mono-crop areas
is essential to reduce rural poverty
  • Farmers in mono-crop low lands benefit from
farming high priced prawn alternating with paddy
  • With expanded family sizes, generated new needs
and constantly increasing living cost, farmers
need further income enhancement from their
    limited lands
  • Contd..

4
4. BACKGROUND - 2
  • Prawn farming presently limited only to the
second half of the growth period ability to
raise two prawn crops a year could have greatly
    boosted up rural economy
  • First half remains unutilized due to
unavailability of prawn fry or fingerling and
    water
  • Fry from hatchery or the wild not available
    before May

5
5. PROBLEMS OF SEED AVAILABILITY
  • Fry from hatchery or wild not be available in
    large numbers before May
  • Post larvae produced after July have little
demand so prawn hatcheries do not produce any
    post larvae beyond July

6
6. QUESTIONS
  • Is it possible to successfully over-winter late
    season Galda juveniles?
  • Will the stunted over wintered juveniles
    demonstrate sufficiently fast compensatory growth
when exposed to next growth season in February?
  • Will farming with over-wintered juveniles be
    economically attractive?

7
7. TEST CULTURE WITH OVER-WINTERED GALDA
JUVENILES
  • With WorldFish Centre (WFC) support, the author
conducted some experiments from 29 October to 25
    May to answer above questions
  • Experiments were conducted in farmers ponds at
two places between 24 and 25o N latitude
  • December January water temperatures fell to 16
    -22 C temperature rose to 32 C in May
  • No artificial aeration at any stage

13. Findings and Recommendations - 1
  • Late season Galda juveniles can be successfully
over wintered and profitably used for raising an
    assured early crop of Galda
  • An early prawn crop plus a traditional prawn crop
may significantly increase farmers income from
    their land
  • Proper extension of the results may generate
demands for late season PL and juveniles and
therefore trigger hatchery operation over an
    extended period

14
14. Findings and Recommendations - 2
  • Extended hatchery operation, nursing and farming
    and the resultant increased production,
marketing, export, etc will increase domestic
sales, export, income and related other economic
    activities
  • WorldFish Centre (WFC) may
  • - Organize training and extension for commercial
    application of the technology
  • - Prepare and distribute extension materials
  • - Organize joint workshops with farmers,
    hatchery operators and bankers
