• became guides, carved out trails to the west

Oregon Trail (1840-1860)

• thousands made the journey
• most walked the entire trip!
• 1 in 10 died disease was 1 killer

Mormon Trail

• published Book of Mormon
• forced out of New York for their beliefs
• killed in Illinois by an angry mob

• new head of church
• took followers west to worship freely
• settled near Great Salt Lake, Utah in 1847
