Dorothea Lange
  • In 1902 at age seven, Lange had polio. There was
no cure for it but she came out of it with a
    weakened right leg and a
  • dropped foot.
  • In 1907, he father leaves her and her family
  • behind and she never saw him again.
  • Six years later, she graduates from Wadleigh
  • High School in Harlem and moves on to a
  • New York training school for teachers.
  • After school, she received her first job from
  • the famous Arnold Genthe, and thats how it
  • all started.

Famous Photos
  • This is probably Langes most famous picture.
  • It was taken during the depressions
  • While walking through a pea pickers camp Lange
noticed this thirty-two year old woman with her
seven children. There was no work and they were
living on wild birds caught by the children. She
could not move on, she told Lange, because she
had sold the tires from her car for food.
  • This photo really shows the hardships of the
depression and the physical and emotional pain
    people went through.

Quotes
  • One should really use the camera as though
    tomorrow you'd be stricken blind.
  • Photography takes an instant out of time,
altering life by holding it still.
  • Pick a theme and work it to exhaustion... the
subject must be something you truly love or truly
    hate
  • While there is perhaps a province in which the
photograph can tell us nothing more than what we
see with our own eyes, there is another in which
it proves to us how little our eyes permit us to
    see.

Famous Photos
  • This picture was taken in San Francisco while a
man was waiting in the line for his ration of
    bread.
  • Titled after a San Francisco widow, Lois Jordan,
who became known as the "white Angel" when she
established a soup kitchen to feed the needy and
    hungry.
  • Lange would usually take pictures of people who
were going through hard times. She didnt take to
    many happy pictures.

Famous Photos
  • Dorothea Lange worked for the American
    governments Farm Security Administration program
during the Great Depression of the 1930's. The
F.S.A. was set up to relieve poverty in rural
areas but also involved photographing conditions
faced by displaced farmers who had been hit by
the Depression and by drought. Thats how she got
the chance to take most of these pictures.

Famous Photos
  • The I AM AN AMERICAN sign appeared on December 8,
1941, on a grocery store in Oakland, California,
one day after Pearl Harbor was bombed by Japan.
The owner of the store was a Japanese American
and graduate of the University of California,
    Berkeley.

Famous Photos
  • Lange's "Migratory Children Living in 'Rambler's
Park'" was taken in 1939, in Yakima Valley, Wash.
  • She would mostly just take pictures where ever
she was. She would ask the people if she could
photograph them. When they said sure, she would
walk around until they forgot she was there so
she could get a real picture.

Favorite Picture
  • This is my favorite photograph by Dorothea Lange
. I like how the house takes up the whole picture
and how theres a lot going on. There is also a
lot of texture in this picture. I also like how
this people in this picture are so laid back and
it just looks like its a slow day at the gas
    station.
