    status report in AO on Thursday, August 14, 2014.
  • Contact your seniors counselor if you have any
    questions or concerns.

Academic Grade Point Average
  • known as core GPA, core academic GPA
  • Basis is English, Math, Science, Social Studies,
    and World Languages courses.
  • Take a look at your GPA on your transcript, then
    FORGET IT!!
  • Colleges individually decide how they calculate
    admissions academic GPA.
  • Weight courses differently
  • Courses to include in calculating your admissions
    GPA may differ from college to college.

Transcripts
  • What?
  • Most colleges request an official transcript as
    part of the application. 2 each (first one is no
    charge).
  • Official vs Unofficial
  • How to get one?
  • 1 submit your application to college.
  • 2 Bring proof youve submitted the application
    to counseling office. (Print a copy of the email
    or bring it on your phone to show us.)
  • Transcript request card must be completed EVERY
    time you need a transcript.
  • Must be requested in writing with your signature.
  • Card stays on file in the Counseling office so
    you can always know when and where your
    transcript was sent.

Transcripts
  • When?
  • Each time you submit an application to a
    different college or scholarship application.
  • At the end of first semester, if requested by
    your college (mid-year transcript).
  • FINAL TRANSCRIPT has a graduation date on it.
    Required by your college as proof of high school
    graduation. Order this in May.

Recommendations
  • Some colleges require recommendations some do
    not. It will tell you in your application
    instructions.
  • Dont request a recommendation if its not
    required.
  • Teacher Recommendations
  • Talk with the teacher(s) you would like to write
    your recommendation,
  • Complete the purple POPE HS Teacher
    Recommendation Request and give to the teacher,
    along with anything else he/she has asked for.

  • Counselor Recommendations
  • Know if its required or not.
  • Complete Senior Self-Assessment
  • Parents complete Parent Assessment form
  • Ask 2-3 teachers to complete the Teacher
    Information request (green sheet) to give to the
    counselor for input.
  • Submit your application to the college
  • Request the transcript.
  • The counselor recommendation request is on the
    transcript request card. They go together!

Deadlines
  • Types of deadlines for colleges
  • Regular deadline receive a decision at the
    standard respons date.
  • Early action Receive a decision earlier than the
    standard response date BUT are NOT required to
    accept the admission offer or make a deposit
    prior to May 1.
  • Early Decision Commit to enroll at the college
    if admitted and offered a satisfactory financial
    aid package. Application deadlines are usually in
    November to December with a mid-to-late December
    notification. You can only apply to one Early
    Decision school.
  • Rolling admissions decisions are usually made
    within 6 weeks of submitting the application.
  • Priority deadlines mostly associated with
    getting into the institutional scholarship pools.
    Check these deadlines closely.

    recommendation are due to your counselor
  • NO LATER THAN THREE WEEKS PRIOR TO THE COLLEGE
    DEADLINE.

Deadlines
  • Work Backwards to Determine All Your Deadlines
  • Example Application deadline for the college is
    Oct 15.
  • Counselor recommendation request deadline Sept
    24 (3 weeks prior to Oct 15)
  • This means you have submitted the application to
    the college, requested your transcript, completed
    and given to your counselor your self-assessment,
    parent assessment, and teacher input forms by
    Sept 24 for an October 15 deadline.

The Common Application
  • Complete one form for multiple participating
    colleges.
  • Some colleges have a supplemental form to
    complete also.

College Essay
  • Not every college application requires an essay.
  • Number one rule from college admissions officers
    PROOFREAD and FOLLOW DIRECTIONS.
  • Be yourself in your essay! Write about yourself,
    not TO the admissions office. Show, dont tell!

HOPE GPA Calculation
  • 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Your HOPE GPA is NOT, NOT, NOT on your
    transcript.
  • All credits attempted in English, Math, Science,
    Social Studies and World Languages.
  • AP dual enrollment classes are given a .5 QP
    weight except for a grade of A
  • No other classes are weighted.
  • If you dont earn HOPE out of high school, you
    have other opportunities at the 30, 60, and 90
    hours earned mark in college.

HOPE Scholarship
  • Regular HOPE
  • Students must have a 3.0 HOPE GPA upon graduation
    (AP, Dual Enrollment classes weighted .5).
  • Students must maintain a 3.0 GPA in college to
    keep HOPE.
  • The HOPE amount is capped at 90 percent of the
    2010-2011 tuition rate at USG institutions.
  • Lose HOPE? May recover only once.

Zell Miller Scholarship
  • Student must have a 3.7 core unweighted HOPE GPA
    upon graduation and either a combined 1200 on the
    critical reading and math sections of the SAT or
    at least a 26 Composite ACT score. These test
    scores must come from a single test sitting.
  • Zell Miller Scholarship will cover tuition at
    100 for an academic year.
  • Students must maintain a 3.3 GPA in college to
    keep the Zell Miller scholarship.
  • Students who drop below the college 3.3 GPA can
    earn Regular HOPE if their GPA remains at 3.0 or
    above.

HOPE Grant
  • The HOPE Grant program is for students seeking a
    technical certification or diploma, regardless of
    the student's high school grade point average or
    graduation date.
  • The HOPE Grant Award Amount will cover a portion
    of a student's tuition.
  • Full-time enrollment is not required.
  • At the 30-hour checkpoint, you must have a 2.0
    GPA to maintain eligibility.

SAT ACT
  • Check with the colleges to which you are applying
    to see what the final test date they accept for
    admissions.
  • Official test scores for colleges must be sent
    directly from your account at SAT or ACT.
  • Pope HS does not send test scores.
  • Fall SAT dates Oct 11, Nov 8, Dec 6
  • Fall ACT dates Sept 13, Oct 25, Dec 13

What should parents be doing??
  • Provide encouragement / support and be a sounding
    board for your senior.
  • Cultivate your students growth by allowing your
    senior to do the work of college admissions
    themselves.
  • Let your student take ownership of the process.
  • Do not become a helicopter parent!
