Learning Theory
  • What is Teaching?
  • Answer?
  • Definition educate instill knowledge
  • Teachers are those who help clients learn.
  • The objective is typically a course of study or
    curriculum, or a
  • practical skill (Social Skills), including
    learning(Independent Living) and thinking
    (Academic) skills.

What methods are in place to teach?
  • The different ways to teach are often referred to
    as the teacher's pedagogy.
  • Our method of teaching alternatives to
maladaptive behaviors is Learning Theory in which
    we support Behaviorsim and Cognitivism.

Behaviorism Operant conditioning
  • A behavior may result either in reinforcement,
which increases the likelihood of that behavior
    occurring again or punishment,which decreases
the likelihood of the same behavior recurring in
    the future.
  • The issues surrounding are relatively complex.

TFM Learning Theory
  • Youth Quest has adopted the Teaching Family Model
which has adopted Learning Theory as the method
    of teaching to use.
  • This has been done while considering the clients'
    background knowledge, environment, and their
learning goals as well as standardized curriculum
as determined by their service plan which is
updated and prescribed during home team meetings

Why is Learning Theory in the Pre-Service
  • It is the foundation upon which the Teaching
    Family Model has been built.
  • Day to day focus is on observable and teachable
    skills and behaviors
  • Focus is on behaviors
  • It provides a proven strategy

Basic Learning Theory Principles
  • Learning New Behaviors?
  • Reinforcement
  • Continuous Reinforcement
  • Intermittent Reinforcement

  • Reducing behaviors
  • Extinction
  • Response Cost
  • Chaining
  • Follow Directions
  • Look at person
  • Say okay
  • Do task immediately
  • Tell person youre done

Basic Learning Theory Principles
  • Fading
  • 1. Preventive Teaching Skill
  • Showing Sensitivity to Others
  • In preventive teaching interaction.
  • I would like you to refrain from making jokes or
rude comments about other peoples religion
  • TO
  • 2. Effective Praise
  • John, just a minute ago I noticed that you
corrected yourself when you started to make a
    rude comment about that religion
  • TO
  • 3. Intermittent Reinforcement
  • Example a thumbs up by a Practitioner when you
notice he doesnt make a rude comment when the
same topic presents itself that he perhaps was
    rude about the religion before.
  • To a nod of approval when you catch him.

Basic Learning Theory Principles
  • Punishment
  • Should only be used as a last resort, why?
  • How do some Practitioners fall into the trap of
  • Temporary suppression of undesired
  • This produces the vicious cycle of
heavier and heavier doses of punishment to
    control behavior due to satiation.

Basic Learning Theory Principles
  • Generalization
  • the opposite
  • Discrimination

Basic Learning Theory Principles
Summing it all up!
  • Start to really analyze how you learned behaviors
    which help you today!
  • Really think about it? Was it the result of one
    of these learning theory principles?
  • Was it positive or negative?
