  • The region is a huge peninsula with many smaller
    peninsulas
  • -Scandinavian
  • -Jutland
  • -Iberian
  • -Balkan
  • -Italian
  • The people of Western Europe live near the water
    throughout history, many countries have been
    great sea powers
  • (France, Spain, Portugal, England).

Colonization
  • The countries set up colonies around the world
    for land, raw materials, and control. Many
    people made their living through sea trading,
    fishing, and ship building. Many people still do
    these jobs today.

  • The region is farther north than the USA
  • Rome, Italy has a higher latitude than NYC.
  • London has about the same latitude as the Hudson
    Bay.
  • More temperate because of the ocean currents with
    plentiful rainfall.

  • January in Chicago (31F to 16F)
  • Southern coast of France is about the same
    latitude as Montreal, Canada.
  • Alps keep cold air from passing from the north
    and winds bring warm air from Africa.
