presos a Jerusalén y castigarlos.

6

Acts of the Apostles 223 16
3 Paul addressed the people in these words I
am a Jew, born in Tarsus in Cilicia, but brought
up in this city. At the feet of Gamaliel I was
educated strictly in our ancestral law and was
zealous for God, just as all of you are today.
4 I persecuted this Way to death, binding both
men and women and delivering them to prison.
10
5 Even the high priest and the whole council
of elders can testify on my behalf. For from
them I even received letters to the brothers and
set out for Damascus to bring back to Jerusalem
in chains for punishment those there as well.
6 On that journey as I drew near to Damascus,
about noon a great light from the sky suddenly
shone around me.
7 I fell to the ground and heard a voice
saying to me, Saul, Saul, why are you
persecuting me?

12
8 I replied, Who are you, sir? And he said
to me, I am Jesus the Nazorean whom you are
persecuting.
9 My companions saw the light but did not hear
the voice of the one who spoke to me.
10 I asked, What shall I do, sir? The Lord
answered me, Get up and go into Damascus,
and there you will be told about everything
appointed for you to do.
13
11 Since I could see nothing because of the
brightness of that light, I was led by hand by
my companions and entered Damascus.
12 A certain Ananias, a devout observer of the
law, and highly spoken of by all the Jews who
lived there,
13 came to me and stood there and said,
Saul, my brother, regain your sight. And at
that very moment I regained my sight and saw
him.
14
14 Then he said, The God of our ancestors
designated you to know his will, to see the
Righteous One, and to hear the sound of his
voice
15 for you will be his witness before all to
what you have seen and heard.
16 Now, why delay? Get up and have yourself
baptized and your sins washed away, calling
upon his name.

Reflections on Acts
223 - 16 Reflexiones en
Hechos 223 - 16 by Fr. Sam Rosales,
S.J. Jan. 25, 2009

As we celebrate the Conversion of St. Paul,
today we see how Jesus Christ rules the Church.
He personally intervenes as light in the darkest
hours of the early Church. This is a most
important event for the whole world, then and
now. The risen Lord transcends time and space
as God. This is of great consolation to us.
18
19
In Acts of the Apostles Saul introduces himself
to Jerusalem. I am a Jew, born in Tarsus in
Cilicia, but brought up in this city. At the
feet of Gamaliel, I was educated strictly in the
ancestral law and was zealous for God. I
persecuted this Way to death, binding both men
and women and delivering them to prison. He
got letters to authorize him to go to Damascus.
20
a Jerusalén.
hombres y mujeres. Obtuvo cartas
autorizándolo ir a Damasco.
21
As he drew near to Damascus, at about noon, a
great light from the sky suddenly shone. I
fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to
me, Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?
Saul asked Who are you, Lord? (Indicates he
knew it had to do with the divine). He said to
me I am Jesus the Nazorean whom you are
persecuting.
22
Saúl, porqué me persigues? Saúl pregunto
Quién eres, Señor? (En griego, este titulo
ya tiene que ver con lo divino). Él me dijo
Yo soy Jesús Nazareno, a quien tu persigues.
23
Note the credentials of Jesus First, He is a
Nazorean. (It was a tiny, insignificant town
where uneducated and poor Galileans lived.
Often in derision people would ask Can
anything good come from Nazareth? Those people
were called the anawim. This means they were the
small-town insignificant poor people with
whom Jesus identifies. He was crucified as
Jesus of Nazareth. Second, He is persecuted.
24
Noten los credenciales de Jesús. Primeramente,
(Juan 1
46) Lo importante es que Jesús se identificó
con ellos. Fue crucificado como Jesús de
Nazaret.
25
When Herod persecuted Jesus as a baby, St.
Joseph was warned in a dream, and he withdrew
to Egypt and later to Nazareth (Matthew 223).
The prophecy was fulfilled He shall be
called a Nazarene. The anawim provided him a
place of refuge. Our Lady spoke with anawim
spirituality when she prayed the Magnificat
(Luke 1).
26
y despues a Nazaret.
27
God my Savior has regarded the low estate of his
handmaiden. The Lord has exalted those of low
degree he has filled the hungry with good
things, and the rich he has sent away empty
28
In Matthew 1125 Jesus declared I thank
you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for
you have hidden these things from the wise and
understanding, and revealed them to babes
yea, Father, such was your gracious will.
This shows that thanksgiving was characteristic
of the prayer of Jesus.
29
30
From this the Church noted his preferential
option for the poor. They are the persecuted,
the uneducated, the voiceless, the orphans and
the widows, the blind, the lepers, the tax
collectors and prostitutes, sinners. They
loved him, and followed him. They saw him as
one of their own.
31
(Juan
1027).
32
Saul is blinded until he learns obedience by
suffering. He is told what he is to do.
(Acts 2210). What a humiliation! He was led
by the hand to old man Ananias. He is baptized
and receives the name Paul. Once he proclaims
Jesus as the Son of God, he is rejected, time
and time again. Jesus himself directs him to
leave Jerusalem, for he will not be accepted
(Acts. 2218). Eventually he goes to the
Gentiles, glory to God!
33
nosotros, Gloria a Dios!
34
In Philippians 37 St. Paul concludes
Whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the
sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as
loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing
Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have
suffered the loss of all things, and count them
as refuse, in order that I may gain Christ, and
be found in him
35
