What were "Hoovervilles"?
When a severe housing crisis swept the United
States in the 1930s during the Great Depression,
(mostly) men used their wits to survive by
building crude shantytowns with available
materials at the edges of urban areas, such as
Chicago, New York City, Portland, Seattle, and
Washington, D.C. There were hundreds of other
Hoovervilles throughout the country. In many
cases, they were unsanitary and public health
departments were forced to destroy them.
11
EQ Why wouldnt President Hoovers plan for
stopping the Depression work?
  • Hoover wanted to cut Government spending AND
    raise taxes.
  • Hoover also wanted to wait out the depression and
    believed it would reverse.
  • Wanted Charity organizations to handle the
    unfortunates.
  • When he finally acted, chose to offer aid by
lending. It was a dishonor to southerners to
borrow so this was no solution.

12
EQ What was the goal of Roosevelt's Brain Trust?
