Who is Eligible ?

• Language other than English is spoken at home.
• Student is assessed for English language
  proficiency and is at an Emergent, Beginner,
  Intermediate, or Early Advanced level.
• Parents have given their permission for the
  services.

Proficiency Assessment

• Students new to PPS get assessed at Welcome
  Center for Speaking, Reading, Writing, and Basic
  Math skills.
• ELPA (English Language Proficiency Assessment) is
  administered once a year in spring to all ELLs.
• Letters of Notification of ESL Services and
  proficiency levels are mailed to students homes
  each fall.

Students eligible for ESL services receive

• One ELD Period a day English language
  instruction from an ESL Teacher during a regular
  class period
• Content-based instruction the focus is on
  developing language skills in English while
  preparing ELLs to study grade-level content
  material (language arts, science, math, etc.)
  delivered in ELD classes
• Sheltered Instruction English is used as the
  medium for providing content area (LA, SS,
  Explore) instruction. English is adapted by
  content area teachers to the proficiency level
  of ELLs.

Monitoring Exited Students

• Students who have been exited from the ESL
  Program in two last years are closely observed by
  their teachers to determine if these students are
  making an adequate progress in mainstream
  classrooms.
• Parents of recently exited students receive
  letters from ESL Department to inform them of
  their childs progress
• Additional support services are available

Additional ESL Support Services

• Morning homework club meets every day at 8 am in
  the library. Educational Assistant, Ms.
  Valenzuella, is available to translate for
  Spanish speakers and help all students.
• Free ELD tutoring is available through SUN
  School. Parents need to fill out the paperwork,
  and give their permission.
