The human hair

• Mammals are covered with hair. People are
  mammals. We all have three kinds of hair
• long hair (on the head, beard, or underarm)
  
  
• bristles (in noses and ears, eyelashes and
  eyebrows)
• fine body hair (on arms, face, and legs).
• Hair covers the whole body, except for soles of
  feet, palms of hands, mucous membranes, and lips.
• 25 of all hair is hair on the head. You have
  90,000 to 140,000 hairs on your head.

How hair is made up

• Hair is built like a tube out of
• stuff called keratin
• Hair soaks up water like a sponge.
• Whats inside of the tube makes
• its color.
• When people get older the tube has
• less color and the hair turns gray or white.

Structure

• The outside of a hair is covered with tiny
  scales.
• Hair does not have nerves or blood, but it is
  rooted in living skin.
• Hair has two parts a shaft, above the skin, and
  the hair roots in the skin.
• The hair root makes a tiny long tunnel (called a
  follicle) that goes into the lower layers of the
  skin.

• At the end of the tiny tunnel there is a hair
  papilla. The papilla is where the hair grows.
  This is where hair is fed by the blood.
• Slightly below the skin there are oil glands so
  it wont dry out.
• Tiny hair-raising muscles make the oil come out.
  This tiny muscle can make hair stand on end.

Feed Your Hair

• Especially healthy for hair are whole meal
  products, eggs, liver, kidneys, vitamin D,
  herrings, salmon, carrots, green vegetables, and
  vitamin C.

What would be if hair stopped existing?

• Our heads would not be protected against cold,
  heat, wind and weather.
• Sweat, which is held back by your eyebrows,
  would run into your eyes.
• Hair care shops, hairdressers and wig makers
  would go out of business
• Cats, dogs and a lot of other animals (namely,
  mammals) would freeze to death because
  they would not have fur to keep them warm.
• . Jokes about blondes would not be funny.
• The handsome prince would never reach Rapunzel.

Hair Care --Shampoo

• --Everybody uses it. But what is it?
• A hair shampoo is made of water, chemicals,
  coloring substances and scents.
• To have healthy hair, you do not need more than a
  mild shampoo.
• You may need to wash your hair every day.
• You should use the right shampoo for your kind of
  hair.
• Good shampoo wont harm skin or burn eyes.
• It will take oil and dirt out of the hair and
  make it shine.

• Water in pools or the ocean can hurt hair. Wash
  it with clean water as soon as you can.
• Rinse shampoo out all the way. If not, your hair
  wont shine, smell good or be fluffy.
• DO NOT rub your hair dry with a bath-towel. It
  hurts the hair. Wrap a towel around your head
  tightly and pat your hair dry.
• Wait until your hair is dry before you try to
  brush or comb it. Hair knots should not be
  pulled or combed down. Start at the ends and work
  up.

Combs are better for hair than brushes. Get combs
without sharp points and edges that hurt hair.

The fairy tale Rapunzel
On the day Rapunzel was born, she was taken by
a witch. After many years, she grew into a sweet
and beautiful girl. When she was 13 years old,
the old witch brought the girl to a tall tower.
There was one small window at the very top of the
tower. Each time the witch went to visit Rapunzel
in the high tower she cried Rapunzel,
Rapunzel, let down your hair. The witch used
Rapunzels long and golden hair to climb into the
tower.

One day, a prince, saw the tower. He heard a
wondrous, musical voice. He tried to catch a
glimpse of the girl. He watched the tower and one
day he saw the witch. He saw, how the witch
climbed into the tower. The next evening he went
to the tower and cried Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let
down your hair. He climbed her hair as the
witch had done. When he got inside the tower he
saw Rapunzel. They fell in love. He came every
night to see the beautiful girl. Unfortunately
the witch found out.

• One night she came early and saw the prince
  slipping away. The witch climbed into the tower,
  cut off Rapunzels beautiful hair and took her to
  a desert.
• The next evening the prince went to the tower but
  found the witch instead of Rapunzel.
  Brokenhearted he jumped from the tower. He landed
  in briars that scratched his eyes. Blind, he
  wandered about. After many years,!

one day, he heard a sweet and sorrowful voice. He
had found Rapunzel! When she saw the prince, she
began to cry. Her tears fell on the princes
face and healed his eyes. He brought Rapunzel to
his kingdom as his bride where they lived happily
ever after.

A Fable Struwwelpeter

• Once there was a boy named Peter who did not want
  to comb his hair. He did not want to wash it,
  either. No matter what his mother and father
  said, Peter refused to do anything to his hair.
• After a while, Peters hair was full of leaves
  and twigs. One day some birds tried to build a
  nest in Peters hair. Still Peter refused to do
  anything

His hair grew and grew. Soon it covered his
eyes, his nose and his mouth. Still Peter would
not cut, comb or wash his hair. His sister begged
him to do something. So did his brother. Even
his grandparents warned him that if he did not
take care of his hair, something terrible would
happen to him.

And one day it did. Peter had gone for a long
walk to the village. The wind was blowing
fiercely, whipping Peters long hair over his
eyes. Peter could not see where he was going.
He did not see the deep hole that had opened up
in the road, and with one last step, Peter fell
into the hole and was never seen again The moral
of the story is --Mind your parents and watch
where you are going or evil will come to you.

Louisiana Leaders Notable Women in History MADAM
C.J. WALKER (SARAH BREEDLOVE), 1867-1919
BUSINESSWOMAN, PHILANTHROPIST, and INVENTOR
Born Sarah Breedlove on a Delta, LA cotton
plantation, she was be the first Black American
woman millionaire. She is described as the first
self-made American woman millionaire. Orphaned at
age seven, and widowed with a two year old
daughter, she moved to St. Louis. By washing
clothes, she sent herdaughter to Knoxville
College. She decided to start her own line of
hair care products and with less than two
dollars, set up a mail order business in 1906 in
Denver, CO, Her new husband Charles Walker helped
her . The company soon included a beauty school
in Pittsburgh, and later offices in Indianapolis
and Harlem. By 1916 the Walker Company included
20,000 agents in the U.S., Central America, and
the Caribbean.

Madam Walker gave 1000 to the building fund for
the YMCA in the Indianapolis black community
, the largest gift given by an African American
woman. At the 1912 National Negro Business
League convention, after League founder Booker T.
Washington had refused to let her be on the
program, she spoke from the floor and impressed
the mostly male audience so much that they
invited her back the following year. In 1918 she
gave the keynote speech at several NAACP
fund-raisers for the anti-lynching effort and in
her will contributed thousands of dollars to
Black schools, individuals, organizations, and
institutions.

Madam Walker believed in Black women should make
their own money. She built her business at a
time when the only other jobs were wor5king as a
maid or sharecropping. "...I want to say to
every Negro woman present, don't sit down and
wait for the opportunities to come...Get up and
make them!" (National Negro Business League,
1913) Her work led to a multibillion dollar
Black cosmetics company. she used her money and
position to work towards political and economic
rights for African Americans and women.
