Preparing for the event
  • Read the rules
  • Read the rules
  • Read the rules
  • Study basic Anatomy/ AP Bio level textbook
  • internet resources
  • Make the notesheet
  • practice

3
Systems
  • Both levels
  • Respiratory
  • Digestive
  • C only
  • Excretory
  • Student roles
  • Two specialists or two generalists?
  • What is the other one doing on a Stations test?

Topics
  • Do not ignore bulleted subtopics!
  • Left alone, kids will focus almost exclusively on
    labeling
  • Diseases are most often overlooked
  • Both levels
  • Ulcers, digestive cancers, diarrhea, lactose
    intolerance, hepatitis, appendicitis COPD,
asthma, emphysema (!), pneumonia, sleep apnea,
    cystic fibrosis
  • C only
  • Obstructive disorders, UTIs, Glomerular
    disorders, renal failure

Preparing the notesheet
  • Preparing students is more important
  • A good notesheet is necessary for a medal
  • What goes on the notesheet?
  • Diagrams with labels system, organs, tissues
  • Vocabulary specific and general terms
  • Disease info
  • Equations spirometry measures, gas laws,
    GFR/CCr (C only)
  • Bring a calculator!

6
If I make the test
  • At least N stations (N of teams in a block)
  • Equal weight for each system
  • Occasionally a general anatomy station
  • Roughly equal weight for each bullet
  • Long 100 to 150 questions
  • No time to consult notesheet for every question
  • Mostly multiple choice and matching
  • When I run out of ideas, I consult the training
    handout (on your CD)
