Assessment practice will follow and reinforce the
curriculum and promote high quality learning and
teaching approaches. Assessment of childrens and
young peoples progress and achievement during
their broad general education to the end of S3
will be based on teachers assessment of their
knowledge and understanding, skills, attributes
and capabilities, as described in the experiences
and outcomes across the curriculum. Building

Multiplying out brackets
Having explored the Distributive Law in a
practical context, I can simplify, multiply and
evaluate simple algebraic terms involving a
bracket. MTH 4-14a

Task 2a Inside/outside circle
  • Learners make their own distinct flash cards
(algebraic expression with brackets on one side
and the expanded version without brackets on the
    reverse) use small post-it notes
  • Number the pupils 1 to 4, get 1s and 2s to form
a circle facing out, then numbers 3 and 4 form a
    circle facing inwards
  • Everyone should have a partner that they are
    facing.
  • Outside partner shows their question to partner
and partner solves, then inside partner does the
    same.
  • These partners then swap questions and the
outside circle moves around one place and the
    same thing happens again.
  • Learners may explain to each other HOW to
multiply out the brackets to give the answer on
the reverse of the flash card.

15
Task 2a extension
Learners can choose to extend this task by
offering their partner the algebraic expression
without brackets and asking them to give the
corresponding algebraic expression with brackets.
16
Thank your partner, return to your family

Task 3 Simultaneous Rotate Check
Academic Task Solve equations by writing out
each stage accurately Social Skills To
try my best and work neatly To check each
others work and correct with kindness if
necessary
20
Task 3 equations
Solve
C. 6x - 7 3x 2
A. 3x 2 5x - 8
B. 4x - 6 2x 8
D. 10x - 12 7x 3
  • Write out the equation, rotate jotters, start the
first line of the solution, rotate jotters
  • on the new jotter write out the next stage of the
solution, rotate jotters, check the previous
working in the next new jotter and continue
rotating jotters after each line of working until
    a solution is reached

21
Task 3 Simultaneous Rotate Check
  • Working in teams of 4, learners follow
    instructions
  • Write out the equation, rotate jotters, start the
first line of the solution, rotate jotters
  • on the new jotter write out the next stage of the
solution, rotate jotters, check the previous
working in the next new jotter and continue
rotating jotters after each line of working until
    a solution is reached
  • By working in this manner, pupils support each
other as needed, stopping to discuss differences
when necessary and giving encouragement and
    positive feedback throughout.
  • Possible Evidence Photograph or short video
clip or pupils can initial their lines in a
    solution

26
Task 4 - Show-Me-Boards
In teams of 4, all pupils answer a given question
simultaneously on their board and share their
solutions with their team. If needed they then
discuss and agree on the correct solution and
this is presented as the teams response. (This
can be done repeatedly to check for understanding
and correct misunderstandings within the group.
Teachers role is usually observational. This is
used as checking or for revision once the ideas
have been taught) Evidence Audio, Video

Task 5 Walk About Talk About
Learners follow instructions to write out their
solution to the given bearings questions on a
show-me board or in their jotters. Learners are
then instructed to meet up with 5 different
people out-with their group (from Make a date).
Each pair compare solutions, discuss if different
and agree on the best solution as appropriate.
Learners copy their final version into their
jotters. Timing should be managed by teacher for
changing partners suggest 2 min max per
question. Evidence Short Video Clips
