Title: Six Principles of American Democracy

Six Principles of American Democracy
1st Principle Fundamental worth dignity of
all citizens.
  • All individuals are valued in our society .
  • Ex. Every individual is guaranteed the same due
    process rights equal protections of the law.

2nd Principle Equality of all persons.
  • Provide equal opportunities for all.
  • Evidence Free public (k-12) education.
  • Laws protect citizens against discrimination
    based on race, ethnicity, religious beliefs, sex.
  • Citizens have due process rights equal
    protection under the law - meaning all laws have
    to be the same for everybody- Laws cannot

3rd - Majority Rule minority rights
  • The will of the majority determines policy, but
    the rights of the minority must always be
  • Ex - Religious Tolerance for all.
  • Ex. Free Speech even for those who disagree with
    the majority.

4th Principle - Compromise is necessary
  • In order to do the will of the people, groups
    with differing views must give take to come to
  • Ex. No one likes to pay taxes but we must in
    order to run the country!
  • Dem. Rep. must work through their differences
    in order to accomplish our societies needs!

5th Principle Individual Freedom
  • Freedom is necessary but is not total absolute.
  • Your freedoms end when they infringe upon the
    rights of others.
  • Free speech is limited!
  • Free exercise of religion is limited!
  • Etc.

6th Principle Faith in America
  • These principles exists because Americans believe
    value them.
  • These values are difficult to teach in many
    parts of the world they are not practiced at all.
    Democracy takes work!
  • If they are not valued, they will perish.
