VMHS AVID Expectations
  • Individual Determination (AVID is a choice not a
    requirement) Its not just a program, Its an
    Attitude!
  • Adopt the AVID Methodologies- Must be willing to
    change some of your personal habits. Do things
    the AVID way!
  • AVID is Competitive (Waiting List)- Work Ethic,
    Responsibility, Respect
  • Maintain a Competitive Grade Point Average
    (Tutoring/ Probation/ Dismissal)- Effort Wins!
  • Complete a Rigorous Course of Study (minimum 1
    Advanced Placement/ Dual Enrollment Course before
    graduation)
  • Actively Participate on Campus (sports, clubs,
    band, leadership etc.)

What are the AVID Methodologies all students will
be expected to follow?
  • Cornell Notes 1 page (front and back) per class
    each day (Math, English, Science, World Language)
  • Notebook Checks Done every three weeks, monitors
    note taking, organization, and time management
  • Grade Checks Monitored every three weeks
  • Tutorials Fosters critical thinking skills and
    analysis, focuses on core subjects, done once or
    twice a week
  • Tutoring Peer tutoring, college tutoring, grade
    improvement (required for multiple Cs or any
    grade lower than a C). 2 hours per week

What is a College Prep. Schedule (A-G Courses)?
  • A-G requirements
  • History/Social Science-2 years required
  • English-4 years required
  • Mathematics-3 required, 4 recommended
  • Lab Science-2 required, 3 recommended
  • Foreign Language-2 required, 3 recommended
  • Visual and Performing Arts- 1 year required
  • College Prep electives-1 year required

Sample 9th Grade Schedule
The following is a typical schedule for an
incoming freshman. The periods of the particular
classes will vary as will the choice of foreign
language and level of math. However, the majority
of the classes will remain consistent. Students
that plan to be involved in Band, Chorus or ASB
will have to make some special concessions within
their schedule (usually postpone language class
until following year). Period 1 Advanced
English I / (English I on a limited
basis) Period 2 Math (Algebra I/ Geometry/
Algebra II) Period 3 AVID 9 Period 4 World
Language I (Spanish/ ASL / French) Period 5 CP
Biology Period 6 Health/ Computers Period 7
PE 9 (mandated for all 9th graders)

Final Thoughts
  • All Students should plan to attend Link Crew
    Orientation (August 4th, 730 am-1200 pm) and
    Registration (August 5th/ 6th split by alpha)
  • Vista Murrieta Schedule (730 am-230 pm) Arrive
    early- traffic is an issue
  • A Day (Periods 1, 3, 5, 7)
  • B Day (Periods 2, 4, 5, 6)
  • School Officially Counts Success is a Choice
    (Attendance/ Homework) / Sacrifice / No
    Regrets!!!
