Martin Luther
My spirit cannot accommodate Itself to this

think Highly of it Christ is neither Taught not
known in it.

  • I saw heaven standing open. There was a white
horse, and its rider is named Faithful and True.
With integrity he judges and wages war. His eyes
are flames of fire. On his head are many crowns.
He has a name written on him, but only he knows
what it is. He wears clothes dipped in blood, and
his name is the Word of God. The armies of
heaven, wearing pure, white linen, follow him on
white horses. A sharp sword comes out of his
mouth to defeat the nations. He will rule them
with an iron scepter and tread the winepress of
the fierce anger of God Almighty. On his clothes
and his thigh he has a name written King of
kings and Lord of lords. I saw an angel standing
in the sun. He cried out in a loud voice to all
the birds flying overhead, Come! Gather for the
great banquet of God. Eat the flesh of kings,
generals, warriors, horses and their riders, and
all free people and slaves, both important or
    insignificant people.

5
  • I saw the beast, the kings of the earth, and
their armies gathered to wage war against the
rider on the horse and his army. The beast and
the false prophet who had done miracles for the
beast were captured. By these miracles the false
prophet had deceived those who had the brand of
the beast and worshiped its statue. Both of them
were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning
sulfur. The rider on the horse killed the rest
with the sword that came out of his mouth. All
the birds gorged themselves on the flesh of those
who had been killed. (Revelation 1911-21 GW)

6
  • A hideous version of Christianitya repulsive
    work
  • D.H. Lawrence, Apocalypse
  • Resentment and not love is the teaching of the
Revelation of St. John the Divine. Revelation
is a book without wisdom, goodness, kindness, or
    affection of any kind.
  • Harold Bloom, The Revelation of St. John the
    Divine
  • We are bound to judge that in its conception of
the character of God and His attitude to man the
book falls below the level, not only of the
teaching of Jesus, but of the best parts of the
    Old Testament.
  • C.H. Dodd, The Apostolic Preaching and Its
    Development

7
  • The Apocalypse of John is a work of immense
    learning, astonishingly meticulous literary
    artistry, remarkable creative imagination,
    radical political critique, and profound
    theology.
  • Richard Bauckham, The Climax of Prophecy
Studies on the Book of Revelation

  • This is the revelation of Jesus Christ.
    (Revelation 11 GW)
  • Christ made these things known to his servant
John by sending his angel to him, and John has
told all that he has seen. This is his report
concerning the message from God and the truth
revealed by Jesus Christ. (Revelation 11-2 GN)

11
  • Prologue 11-6
  • 7 Churches 17-321
  • 7 Seals 41-81
  • 7 Trumpets 82-1119
  • The Great Controversy
  • In heaven
  • On earth
  • 7 bowls of Gods wrath 151-225
  • Epilogue 226-21

12
  • This is his report concerning the message from
God and the truth revealed by Jesus Christ.
    (Revelation 12, GNB)
  • The dragon was furious with the woman and went
off to fight against the rest of her descendants,
all those who obey Gods commandments and are
faithful to the truth revealed by Jesus.
    (Revelation 1217, GNB)
  • I am a servant together with you and with other
believers, all those who hold to the truth that
Jesus revealed. Worship God! For the truth that
Jesus revealed is what inspires the prophets.
    (Revelation 1910, GNB)
  • I also saw the souls of those who had been
executed because they had proclaimed the truth
that Jesus revealed and the word of God.
    (Revelation 204, GNB)

13
  • The message of Revelation is best represented as
a message of healing and not as a message of
    destruction.

  • Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth. The
first heaven and the first earth disappeared, and
the sea vanished. And I saw the Holy City, the
new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from
God, prepared and ready, like a bride dressed to
meet her husband. I heard a loud voice speaking
from the throne Now God's home is with people!
He will live with them, and they shall be his
people. God himself will be with them, and he
will be their God. He will wipe away all tears
from their eyes. There will be no more death, no
more grief or crying or pain. The old things have
    disappeared. (Revelation 211-4 GNB)

17
  • The angel also showed me the river of the water
of life, sparkling like crystal, and coming from
the throne of God and of the Lamb and flowing
down the middle of the city's street. On each
side of the river was the tree of life, which
bears fruit twelve times a year, once each month
and its leaves are for the healing of the
nations. Nothing that is under God's curse will
be found in the city. The throne of God and of
the Lamb will be in the city, and his servants
will worship him. They will see his face, and his
name will be written on their foreheads. There
shall be no more night, and they will not need
lamps or sunlight, because the Lord God will be
their light, and they will rule as kings forever
    and ever. (Revelation 221-5 GNB)

18
  • Then at the east side of the garden he put
living creatures and a flaming sword which turned
in all directions. This was to keep anyone from
coming near the tree that gives life. (Genesis
    324 GNB)
  • To those who win the victory I will give the
right to eat the fruit of the tree of life that
grows in the Garden of God. (Revelation 27 GNB)

19
  • I heard you in the garden I was afraid and hid
from you, because I was naked. (Genesis 310
    GNB)
  • They will see his face, and his name will be
written on their foreheads. (Revelation 224
    GNB)

20
  • At this point I had another vision and saw an
open door in heaven. And the voice that sounded
like a trumpet, which I had heard speaking to me
before, said, Come up here, and I will show you
what must happen after this. At once the Spirit
took control of me. There in heaven was a throne
with someone sitting on it. His face gleamed like
such precious stones as jasper and carnelian, and
all around the throne there was a rainbow the
color of an emerald. In a circle around the
throne were twenty-four other thrones, on which
were seated twenty-four elders dressed in white
and wearing crowns of gold. (Revelation 41-4
    GNB)

21
  • From the throne came flashes of lightning,
rumblings, and peals of thunder. In front of the
throne seven lighted torches were burning, which
are the seven spirits of God. Also in front of
the throne there was what looked like a sea of
glass, clear as crystal. Surrounding the throne
on each of its sides, were four living creatures
covered with eyes in front and behind. The first
one looked like a lion the second looked like a
bull the third had a face like a human face and
the fourth looked like an eagle in flight. Each
one of the four living creatures had six wings,
and they were covered with eyes, inside and out.
Day and night they never stop singing Holy,
holy, holy, is the Lord God Almighty, who was,
who is, and who is to come. (Revelation 45-8
    GNB)

22
  • The four living creatures sing songs of glory
and honor and thanks to the one who sits on the
throne, who lives forever and ever. When they do
so, the twenty-four elders fall down before the
one who sits on the throne, and worship him who
lives forever and ever. They throw their crowns
down in front of the throne and say, Our Lord
and God! You are worthy to receive glory, honor,
and power. For you created all things, and by
your will they were given existence and life.
    (Revelation 49-11 GNB)

23
  • I saw a scroll in the right hand of the one who
sits on the throne it was covered with writing
on both sides and was sealed with seven seals.
And I saw a mighty angel, who announced in a loud
voice, Who is worthy to break the seals and open
the scroll? But there was no one in heaven or on
earth or in the world below who could open the
scroll and look inside it. I cried bitterly
because no one could be found who was worthy to
open the scroll or look inside it. (Revelation
    51-4 GNB)

24
  • Then one of the elders said to me, Don't cry.
Look! The Lion from Judah's tribe, the great
descendant of David, has won the victory, and he
can break the seven seals and open the scroll.
Then I saw a Lamb standing in the center of the
throne, surrounded by the four living creatures
and the elders. The Lamb appeared to have been
killed. It had seven horns and seven eyes, which
are the seven spirits of God that have been sent
through the whole earth. The Lamb went and took
the scroll from the right hand of the one who
sits on the throne. As he did so, the four living
creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down
before the Lamb. Each had a harp and gold bowls
filled with incense, which are the prayers of
    Gods people. (Revelation 55-8 GNB)

25
  • They sang a new song You are worthy to take
the scroll and to break open its seals. For you
were killed, and by your sacrificial death you
bought for God people from every tribe, language,
nation, and race. You have made them a kingdom of
priests to serve our God, and they shall rule on
earth. Again I looked, and I heard angels,
thousands and millions of them! They stood around
the throne, the four living creatures, and the
elders, and sang in a loud voice The Lamb who
was killed is worthy to receive power, wealth,
wisdom, and strength, honor, glory, and praise!
    (Revelation 59-12 GNB)

26
  • And I heard every creature in heaven, on earth,
in the world below, and in the sea---all living
beings in the universe---and they were singing
To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb,
be praise and honor, glory and might, forever and
ever! The four living creatures answered,
Amen! And the elders fell down and worshiped.
    (Revelation 513-14 GNB)

27
  • Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his
angels fought against the dragon, who fought back
with his angels but the dragon was defeated, and
he and his angels were not allowed to stay in
heaven any longer. The huge dragon was thrown
out---that ancient serpent, named the Devil, or
Satan, that deceived the whole world. He was
thrown down to earth, and all his angels with
    him. (Revelation 127-9 GNB)

28
  • Through the Son, then, God decided to bring the
whole universe back to himself. God made peace
through his Sons blood on the cross and so
brought back to himself all things, both on earth
and in heaven. (Colossians 120 GNB)

29
  • The beast was allowed to make proud claims which
were insulting to God, and it was permitted to
have authority for forty-two months. It began to
curse God, his name, the place where he lives,
and all those who live in heaven. It was allowed
to fight against God's people and to defeat them,
and it was given authority over every tribe,
nation, language, and race. (Revelation 135-7
    GNB)

30

live on it to worship the first beast, whose
wound had healed. The beast told them to build an

Churchgoers more likely to support torture
  • 54 of people who attend services at least once a
week said the use of torture against suspected
terrorists is "often" or "sometimes" justified.
  • 42 of people who "seldom or never" go to
    services agreed

44
  • You have heard that it was said, 'An eye for an
eye, and a tooth for a tooth.' But now I tell
you do not take revenge on someone who wrongs
you. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, let
him slap your left cheek too. And if someone
takes you to court to sue you for your shirt, let
him have your coat as well. And if one of the
occupation troops forces you to carry his pack
one mile, carry it two miles. When someone asks
you for something, give it to him when someone
wants to borrow something, lend it to him. You
have heard that it was said, 'Love your friends,
hate your enemies.' But now I tell you love your
enemies and pray for those who persecute you.
    (Matthew 538-44 GNB)
