    by the bible

4
Why challenge now?
  • People did not challenge until periods after and
    during Renaissance
  • Exploration opened Europeans eyes to new truths
  • Advances in astronomy and math for navigation
  • Printing press spread ideas leading to increase
    knowledge and education

5
One old Idea
  • The Earth believed to be center of universe
    Geocentric theory
  • God had placed Earth on center of universe

6
Copernicus

Why hadnt this come about earlier?

    no one accepted
  • knew religious figures would oppose view- did not
publish book till last year of his life 1543 his
findings On the Revolutions of Heavenly Bodies
  • He receives copy on deathbed

8
Building upon Copernicus
  • Scientists later built on this by using math
  • Johanne Kepler concluded planets do not move in
    circles but in elliptical orbits

Galileo
  • Galileo Galilei
  • used telescope and studied planets
  • wrote book Starry Messenger 1610
  • Concluded Jupiter had 4 moons
  • Earths moon was rough and had an uneven surface
  • Went against ideas of Aristotle accepted by
    church
  • Heavy objects fall faster?
  • Shape whether things float?
  • Heavier than water sink?

Bacon and Descartes
  • Francis Bacon and Rene Descartes
  • -Both were important thinkers of 1600s
  • - Both believed we relied too much on past
    assumptions
  • - Bacon urged for experiments to draw conclusions
  • - Descartes believed in math and logic
  • - created analytical geometry linking algebra and
    geometry

15
Scientific Method
  • Scientific Method
  • Problem or Question ? hypothesis?
    experiment/collect data? interpret data-?
    conclusion

16
Scientific Method Bacon Descartes
17
I think, therefore I am.
18
Newton
  • Isaac Newton- mid 1600
  • laws of motion
  • gravity
  • all things attracted to one another
  • Optics
  • First light refracting telescope
  • Used past knowledge to develop calculus
  • Used reason and not religion to find answers

19
Boyle Law gas, pressure temperature
  • Boyles law
  • Explained how volume, temperature and pressure of
    gas affect each other

20
Medicine Harveys Heart
21
New Tools
  • New tools created
  • microscope by a Dutch Eyeglass maker
  • Barometer for measuring pressure and predicting
    weather
  • Thermometer
  • Small pox vaccine late 1700s- British
    physician Edward Jenner
  • Studies on anatomy of humans including bones and
    muscles
  • More elements than earth, air, fire, and water
  • Each of these is made up of smaller particles?
Beginning of periodical table of elements

22
Why is the Scientific revolution important?
  • Lead to new discoveries
  • Changed the way people think
  • Challenged power of church? decline?
  • Science vs. Religion

23
