Welcome
Seán Bradbury NW Core Skills Programme
Manager Cheshire Merseyside Teaching PCT

3
What we want from today
  • Wide support for the Core Skills
  • Needs to be adopted  - A waste sitting on the
    shelf
  • The more people use it - The greater the
    benefit
  • A collective commitment to make this
    happen    and accelerate adoption

4
What we want from today
  • Are you ready?
  • LETS JUST DO IT!

5
Future Workforce Student Feedback
Pauline Wood Core Skills Future Workforce
Workstream / UCLan
6
Aims of Presentation
  • To share student feedback from the Future
    Workforce survey
  • To use the feedback to inform further adoption
of, and roll out of Core Skills Framework

7
Junior Doctor Survey
  • Completed in 2012
  • Across North West Trusts and HEIs
  • 86 responses geographical spread
  • Core themes emerged
  • Duplication of training can be every 3-6 months
  • Waste of time and resources students and
    trainers
  • Potential impact on patient care

8
Overview of Future Workforce Workstream Survey
  • Survey opened 10/11/12
  • 128 respondents by 12/12/12
  • Range of Health Professions
  • Range of HEIs across the North West
  • Year of study approx 1/3rd of each (1,2,3)

9
Trainee/Student Professions
  • Clinical Psychologist
  • Dental Therapy/Hygiene
  • Radiographer
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Health Visitor
  • Community Matron
  • Community Nursery Nurse
  • Physiotherapy
  • Paramedic
  • Midwife
  • Nurse Adult, Mental Health and Childrens Field

10
Placements
  • Across the North West
  • NHS Trusts (Hospital/Community/Mental Health)
  • Partner Organisations (Private, Voluntary,
    Independent)
  • Frequency of placement variable
  • 1 - 5 times per year
  • Change of placement site variable
  • Never change site - change site each placement

11
HEIs
  • University of Chester
  • University of Manchester
  • University of Liverpool
  • Manchester Metropolitan University
  • University of Central Lancashire

12
Experience of Statutory and Mandatory training -
HEIs
  • Majority of students reported
  • Annual training /updates
  • Main sessions - BLS, Moving Handling, Infection
    Control
  • Variable delivery time from one 2 hour session to
2 days up to 1 week
  • Safeguarding Vulnerable Adults/Children 2 hour
    session 1 day
  • Breakaway/De-escalation 3 hrs to 1 day
  • All sessions delivered by HEI staff
  • One HEI is using Core Skills online packages and
    assessment

13
Experience of Statutory and Mandatory training
NHS Trusts / Partner Organisations
  • Majority of students reported
  • Repetition of topics delivered by HEIs (not BLS)
  • Health Safety, Fire Safety, Information
    Governance
  • Time variable from 3 hours to 2 days

14
Experience of Statutory and Mandatory training
  • Of concern
  • a minority of students reported that they had not
had any Statutory or Mandatory training in either
    HEI or Trust/partner orgnisation
  • Some students felt like the training was just a
tick box exercise to cover legal requirements
  • Accessing computers in Trusts / Partner
    organisations is challenging

15
What worked well?
  • Students responses varied
  • Some preferred accessibility of online packages
  • Some preferred face to face sessions with
    practical experience
  • Majority were more confident when they had been
    assessed
  • Majority felt that annual updates were valuable
  • Some liked hand-outs so that they could revisit
the topic in their own time

16
What could be improved?
  • Majority of students were happy with the training
  • Some students felt that the training was very
basic and did not address their specific needs
    or experience
  • Reducing the duplication
  • Reducing conflicting information across HEI /
    Trusts / Partner Organisations
  • Recognition of prior training
  • Give facts and stop using fairytales and
    metaphors
  • Use interactive approaches rather than talking
    at us

17
Experiences of Duplication
  • find it frustrating when moved from one Trust
to another that training is not generic and has
to be repeated even if only recently done!
  • .I have had to undertake the same training on
placement as already completed in university
    because of paperwork..
  • I did BLS training with my employer a month
before re doing it again with the university

18
Experiences of Duplication
  • the uni and hospital training are slightly
different to stop confusion I would work
together and only have one of you do the
    training..
  • ..it is not possible to complete all the
mandatory training within three months of
    starting without significantly impacting upon
    client care and workloads.

19
Conclusions
  • No consistency in statutory and mandatory
    training
  • Extremes of delivery from short sessions to week
    long programme
  • Differences in content delivery between
    organisations
  • Duplication of delivery
  • Costly in terms of time, finance and resources
  • Reinforces the findings from Junior Doctors survey

20
Benefits of the Core Skills Framework
  • Confidence that students are prepared for
    practice
  • Confidence that previous training has been
    delivered to a minimum standard
  • Increased employability of students
  • More effective use of time / resources
  • Allows training to be targeted

Healthcare students for access to any sponsored
    North West Supported E-learning Resources.
  • Aim
  • By May a site which will contain Elearning Lite
    and other key resources

66
Enabling Adoption - Curriculum Alignment
  • Key Issue
  • Need a statement from each education provider to
indicate how, where and when they have
    integrated the CSF into curricula
  • To enable progress, at what level i.e.
Institutional, School or Programme is most
efficient for education providers to undertake
    and indicate their alignment.
  • Is there anything else in addition to the
Readiness Assessment, Content Mapping and Mapping
to Regulatory Standards that would be helpful to
    support curriculum alignment.
  • Review the indicated level of detail that we will
    need to capture.
  • Do you anticipate any difficulties in capturing
    this?
  • Is there any other information that would be
    helpful to include?

67

Enabling Adoption - Core Skills Register
  • Key Aspects for Feedback
  • Who needs to raise this with internal IG lead?
I.e. Through Dean, Heads of Programme?
  • How best to share the Privacy Notice with
    Learners
  • At what level will the mapping of the internal
data systems take place Institution, School or
    Department?
  • Based upon internal patterns of working who and
how many administrators will ideally need to be
    trained for each education provider?
  • Any other practical aspects in addition to IG
    protocol, training, resources, privacy notice
that would be helpful to enable effective use?
  • Key Steps Needed
  • Review IG Protocol
  • Mapping of your Internal data systems to Core
    Skills Framework
  • Training of local administrators
  • Upload training data

69
Working in Partnership
Dr Mike Farrell Head of Educational
Developments Skills for Health
70
Working In Partnership - Additional Induction
Subjects
  • Workshop Task
  • Review the suggested additional subjects commonly
being used to support induction of HealthCare
Students and respond to the following questions.
  • Workshop Questions
  • Any surprises?
  • Would an agreed set of minimum expected learning
outcomes for each of these subjects be set?
  • Currently these subjects are being delivered in a
variety of ways Based upon what is currently
available and can be shared would a
standardised or preferred set of resources be
    useful to develop?

71
Working in Partnership -Brokering for Efficiency
  • Key Issue
  • Feedback has been given that some education
providers might not have all the internal
expertise to support delivery of some Core Skill
subjects based upon the expected standards for
    delivery. Sourcing the required external
expertise to support delivery has been
challenging and time consuming for Education
    Providers.
  • Workshop Task
  • What ideas, potential models and/or arrangements
could we realistically and helpfully broker at
a North West level between Education Providers
NHS Trusts that might be useful to address the
issue and aid efficiency for all?
