  • Acknowledge the familys own expertise
  • About their child,

  • About their culture.
  • Facilitate and empower them to answer their own
    questions.

Self-awareness is essential in recognizing
others strengths.
  • When it is difficult to find a familys
    strengths, look within.
  • What are your attitudes and biases?
  • What stereotypes do you hold?

Affirm the family for the efforts they make and
for the strengths you see.
  • Positive reinforcement and modeling.
  • Explicit acknowledgement for the skills they use.

  • Find your study group and read about your family.
  • Share your reactions to this family. Do you know
    families like this?
  • What is this familys image of success?
  • Think about this family
  • What are their strengths?
  • What are their stresses?
  • In what ways could you support this family? With
