  • Function as nouns subjects, direct objects,
    indirect objects, objects of prepositions, or
    predicate nominatives
  • Begin with words what, who, whoever, whom,
    whomever, whatever, and that

  • What he said didnt make any sense.
  • I did not know that he could not swim.
  • Give whoever calls first the prize.
  • I learn from what I see and hear.
  • His excuse is that he forgot his book.

Adjective Clauses
  • Function as adjectivesdescribe or modify nouns
    and pronouns
  • Begin with words who, whom, whose, which, or that
  • Answer the questions which one, what kind, or how
    many?

What kind of girl?
Rachel is the girl whom I like.

  • Function as adverbsdescribe or modify verbs,
    adjectives, or adverbs
  • Begin with subordinating conjunction
  • Answer questions how, why, when, where, to what
    extent, how much, and under what condition?

When did I eat dessert?
After I finished dinner, I ate my dessert.
