Who am I?
I awarded my men fiefs (feefs) for their service
and loyalty. Others followed my example, and
land ownership became tied to military
service. Land Ownership Power
4
Who am I???
With no central government after my death,
nobles who owned land needed to
protect themselves from Viking raids. Over many
years, nobles grew to be quite powerful.

The writing below is from a poem called Piers the
Plowman, describing a medieval peasant in the
late 1300s in England.     His hood was full of
holes with his hair sticking through, his clumsy
thick shoes showed his toes sticking out as he
walked on the ground He wore two mittens made
out of old rags He was wading in mud almost up
to his ankles, And in front of  him walked four
oxen, so weary and weak you could count their
ribs, so sorry-looking they were.
