  • ACT Prep Science

2
ACT Prep Science Test
  • 35 minutes
  • 40 questions
  • 7 passages

3
  • ACT Prep Science Test
  • The Science Test is a test of your science
    reasoning skills.
  • All of the information you need to answer the
questions correctly is provided in the passages

4
ACT Prep Science Test
  • The ACT Science test emphasizes scientific
reasoning skills rather than recall of scientific
content, mathematical skill, or reading ability

5
ACT Prep Science Test
  • Unlike the Math Test you will not be required to
    remember formulas definitions etc.
  • You are tested on your ability to examine
information using text, chart, graphs and tables.

6
ACT Prep Science
  • Things to do
  • Read the first paragraph of the passage
  • Then, actively skim the questions
    (underline/circle key nouns/verbs)
  • Quickly skim and annotate the passage
  • Make notes in your booklet
  • Draw conclusions as you are reading
  • Note supporting and refuting details
  • Underline defined terms
  • Answer questions

7
ACT Prep Science
  • Things to do
  • Draw lines or in some way indicate which
    charts/graphs/experiments go together
  • Refer dont try to remember
  • Look for patterns and trends in data
  • Look for words that are italicized, bold,
underlined or capitalized they will ask a
    question relating to this word

8
ACT Prep Science
  • Things to do
  • Look at the answer choices before answering
    questions
  • Unlike Math or English where you should try to
determine the answer before looking at the answer
    choices
  • For Science, where you will be analyzing
information displayed in charts and graphs it is
beneficial to narrow down the amount of
information you need to study by looking at the
    answer choices

9
ACT Prep Science
  • Donts
  • Get bogged down in details
  • Worry about understanding everything
  • Confuse charts and graphs
  • Try to remember every detail

10
ACT Prep Science Test
  • The Questions
  • The questions cover
  • Biology
  • Earth Space sciences
  • Chemistry
  • Physics
  • All four areas are represented
  • At least one passage and no more than two passage
    represent each content area

11
ACT Prep Science Test
  • 4 passage types
  • data representation ( 15 questions)
  • research summaries (18 questions)
  • conflicting viewpoints (7 questions)

12
ACT Prep Science Test
  • Data Representation
  • Passage will present with some sort of graph or
    chart
  • Questions will ask you to interpret the
    information given and draw conclusions

13
ACT Prep Science
  • Reading Tables and Graphs
  • Determine what is being represented
  • What do the columns and rows represent
  • Note units of measurement
  • Look for trends in the data
  • Look for correlations
  • Look for peaks or shifts

14
ACT Prep Science Test
  • Research Summaries
  • Passage will present a description of a
scientific experiment and the results of an
investigation (look for tables, raw data)
  • Questions ask you to evaluate the experimental
method, interpret results, and understand the
    implications of the experimental findings.

15
ACT Prep Science
  • Experiments
  • Usually there is a control group plus
    experimental group or groups
  • In well designed experiments, the only difference
between groups will be a variation of the factors
    being tested
  • Identify the problem being researched
  • Look for the control
  • Look for differences - variations
  • Look for trends
  • Look for correlations (relationships)
  • Look for flawsadequate controls? Conclusion
    justified?
  • What do the results show?

16
ACT Prep Science Test
  • Conflicting Viewpoints
  • One passage with 2 or more statements to read
  • Scientists who wrote each statement disagree with
    each other
  • Questions ask you to evaluate each argument,
identify the points of disagreement, and
recognize the evidence that each scientist cites
    in favor of his/her viewpoint
  • You will NOT be asked who is right

17
ACT Prep Science
  • Conflicting Viewpoints
  • A lot of reading usually takes a little longer
  • Reminder refer dont remember
  • You will not have to determine if a viewpoint is
correct instead you will be asked to identify
    similarities and differences among viewpoints
  • Identify the basic issue
  • Determine each scientists point of view
  • Identify how each scientist justifies their point
    of view
  • What to they agree on? Disagree?

18
ACT Prep Science Test
  • 3 QUESTION types
  • Understanding/Literal (7 Q) what is the passage
    saying?
  • Graph identify the variables, controls, and
    values of data points
  • Experiment identify the nature of the problem
    and type of data gathered
  • Controversy what are points being argued?
  • Analysis/Inference (20 Q) what is the deeper
    meaning of the passage?
  • Graph determine how the variables relate to one
another and what is implied by the relationship
  • Experiment were controls adequate, what
conclusions logically flow from the data
  • Controversy how well do the arguments flow from
the facts presented by each scientist
  • Generalization/Extension (13 Q)
  • what further study might be suggested by the
    graph, experiment, or controversy?
  • How do the results impact society?
  • What does the study imply for systems that were
    not part of the study?
  • THE QUESTIONS DO NOT GET HARDER AS YOU PROGRESS
    THROUGH THE TEST

19
ACT Prep Science
  • TIMING
  • Again passages are not arranged in order of
    difficulty
  • The most difficult passage for you may be the
    easiest for someone else
  • Spend 5 minutes TOTAL per passage/question set
  • Try to spend 2 minutes on each passage
  • About 30 seconds per question

20
ACT Prep Science
  • Dont leave any questions unanswered
  • No penalty for wrong answers only credit for
    correct answers
  • GUESS if you dont know the right answers 25
chance of getting the right answer

21
ACT Prep Science
  • Set your watch to _______________
  • When your watch reads ________ your time is up
  • For this practice test I will remind you at 5
minute intervals (on the ACT you get a 5 min
    left warning)
  • If you are not done with passage one after 5
minutes - dont worry but if you are still in
passage one after 10 minutes have passed you will
    need to work more quickly

22
ACT Prep Science
  • Dont spend time agonizing over a questions
  • Avoid thinking long and hard about answer choices
  • If you are stuck make your best guess and move
    on

23
ACT Prep Science
  • Dont panic if you cant finish all passages
  • Try to do well on at least 5 passages
  • The day of the test you will be reminded at 5
    minutes remaining

24
ACT Prep Science
  • If you have less than 3 minutes remaining for an
    entire passage
  • skip the pre-reading
  • look for questions that refer to a specific
    experiment/graph etc
  • Refer to the cited location
  • MAKE SURE YOU GRID AN ANSWER FOR EVERY QUESTIONS
