1
Careers thePrinting Industry
  • Printing Technology

2
Objectives
  • Identify describe the 5 main printing processes
  • List the advantages disadvantages for each
    process

3
Printing Technology
  • All printing processes reproduce lines and/or
    dots that form an image.

4
Printing Technology
  • Printing is the process of manufacturing multiple
    copies of graphic images.
  • Printing is not just limited to ink on paper.
  • Many different substrates can be used (like
    plastic, fabric, wood, etc.)

5
Major Printing Processes
  • The following 5 major printing processes are used
    to reproduce graphic images
  • 1. Relief Printing
  • 2. Intaglio Printing
  • 3. Screen Printing
  • 4. Lithographic Printing
  • 5. Electrostatic Printing

6
Major Printing Processes
  • The relief printing process includes letter press
printing, flexography printing, and all other
methods of transferring an image from a raised
    surface

7
Examples of Relief Printing
  • Corrugated Cardboard Boxes
  • Paper Cartons
  • Plastic Film

8
Major Printing Processes
  • Intaglio Printing is the reverse of relief
printing. An intaglio image is transferred from a
    sunken image.
  • Copperplate etching engraving are 2 intaglio
    processes.

9
Major Printing Processes
  • Industrial intaglio printing is called Gravure.
  • This is used for extremely long press runs.

10
Examples of Gravure (intaglio) Printing
  • Cellophane aluminum Foil candy bar wrappers
  • Readers Digest
  • National Geographic

11
Major Printing Processes
  • Screen printing transfer an image by allowing ink
to pass through openings in a stencil that has
been applied to a screen mesh.
  • This is some times called silk screening.

12
Examples of Screen Printing
  • Shirts
  • Plastic containers
  • Large display signs and billboards
  • Printed circuit boards for electrical equipment

13
Major printing processes
  • Lithography was developed in 1798. Alois
Senfielder used a piece of lime stone a made a
flat image on it. He then transferred the image
    to paper.
  • Lithography, aka offset printing, is based on the
principal that oil and water DO NOT mix.

14
Major Printing Processes
  • A lithographic image is transferred from a flat
    surface.

15
Examples of Lithography
  • Newspaper
  • Books
  • Magazines
  • Pamphlets

16
Electrostatic Printing
  • Electrostatic printing was invented in 1937 by
    Chester Carlson.
  • It involves creating an image by electrostaticly
charging areas of a special drum.
  • As a result, the drum attracts a dry or liquid
toner. The toner is then transferred and fused to
    sheet of paper.

17
Examples of Electrostatic Printing
  • Copy Machines
  • Laser Printers

18
Assignment
  • Given a piece of foam, cardstock, and a piece of
paper, design a relief stamp. Complete it within
the time allowed. Be sure to complete the self
    evaluation form.

19
Assignment 2
  • Given a Mac computer loaded with the internet and
a advantages disadvantages for the 5 printing
processes. Follow the directions on the
assignment sheet. Complete by the end of class
    and score 70 or higher.
