1.) What is the theory of biogenesis?
  • States that living things come only from other
    living things.

5
2.) What are 6 common characteristics of living
things? Living things . . .
  • 1.) have cells.
  • 2.) sense and respond to change
  • 3.) reproduce
  • 4.) have DNA
  • 5.) use energy
  • 6.) Grow and develop

6
3. What is a cell?
  • A cell is a membrane-covered structure that
contains all the materials needed for life.
  • An organism can have anywhere from one cell to
    trillions of cells.

7
PROKARYOTIC CELL
8
EUKARYOTIC CELL
  • PLANT or ANIMAL

9
A PLANT CELL
10
ANIMAL CELL
11
4.) How do they respond to change?
  • Through a stimulus a change in the organisms
    environment that affects its activity.
  • Through homeostasis organisms ability to
    maintain a stable internal environment.

12
STIMULUS
13
HOMEOSTASIS
  • What happens when your body gets too hot?

14
5.) How do living things reproduce?
  • Through asexual reproduction single parent
    produces offspring identical to parent.
  • Through sexual reproduction requires two
parents to produce offspring that shares
    characteristics of both parents.

15
6. What is DNA in living things?
  • DNA (Deoxyribonucleic acid) hereditary material
that controls all function of the cell.
  • Heredity passing down of characteristics from
    one generation to the next.

16
DNA
17
HEREDITY
18
7. How do living things use energy?
  • They use energy to carry out lifes activities.
  • Metabolism is the total of all chemical
    activities.

19
METABOLISM
20
8. How do they grow and develop?
  • Single celled organisms grow by the cell getting
    larger.
  • Multi-celled organisms grow by increasing the
    number of cells.

SIMPLE BARE NECESSITIES of LIFE
23
1.) What are the basic necessities for all
organisms?
  • a.) Food
  • b.) Water
  • c.) Air
  • d.) Living Space

24
2.) What does food provide?
  • Food provides organisms with energy and materials
    to carry on life processes.

25
3.) Why are producers named producers?
  • Producers produce their own food.
  • Ex. Plants use energy from the sun to make food
    from water and carbon dioxide.

26
4.) What are consumers?
  • Consumers must eat (consume) other organisms to
    get food.
  • A salamander is a consumer because it gets the
energy it needs by eating insects and other
    organisms.

27
5.) What are decomposers?
  • Decomposers are organisms that get their food by
breaking down the nutrients in dead organisms.

28
6. How much water makes up cells?
  • 70 of cells are made up of water.

29
7. What elements make up air?
  • Different gases including oxygen and carbon
    dioxide.
  • Organisms on land get oxygen from the air.
  • Organism in water obtain dissolved oxygen or come
    to the surface.

30
8. Whats important about where you live?
  • It must contain all of the things organisms need
    to survive.
  • Because space is limited, some organisms compete
with each other for food, water, and other
    necessities.
