Heart disease
  • The heart is needed to keep you alive.
  • Heart beats 100,000 times a day
  • or 2½ Billion times in 70 years.
  • Heart disease causes gt 650,000 deaths a year
  • most due to atherosclerosis.
  • Atherosclerosis chokes the blood supply to the
    muscle cells of the heart.

5
Risk factors for heart disease
  • Elevated cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Lack of regular exercise
  • Poor diet
  • Tobacco use
  • Diabetes
  • Family history
  • Age
  • Gender

6
Atherosclerosis
  • Begins with injury to the blood vessels
    innermost layer.
  • Causes
  • High blood pressure
  • High fat diet
  • Elevated blood sugar
  • Toxins such as tobacco

7
Atherosclerosis
  • Once the lining of the blood vessels is damaged
    bad cholesterol is deposited.
  • These areas develop scar tissue (plaques) and as
the plaques get bigger, the arteries can become
blocked leading to starvation of the heart
    muscles.
  • These plaques can break off and cause a heart
    attack.
  • This process can be reversed.

8
Atherosclerosis Prevention and Management
  • Exercise
  • Diet
  • Statins
  • Smoking cessation

9
Atherosclerosis Prevention and
ManagementExercise
  • 30 minutes every day.
  • Better than any of the medications on the market.

10
Exercise additional benefitsHelps prevent all
of the top 10 killers
  • Cancer breast colon
  • Stroke lowers blood pressure
  • Lung disease exercise helps smoking cessation
  • Accidents builds bones helps balance
  • Diabetes delays onset
  • Influenza improves immune system
  • Alzheimer improves cognitive function
  • Kidney disease lowers BP, improves diabetes

12
Atherosclerosis Prevention and ManagementDiet
  • Two thirds of adults are overweight
  • Reduce fatty foods egg yolks transfats
  • Eliminate fast foods
  • Avoid fad diets
  • Have a nutritious breakfast
  • Eat small meals with mid morning mid afternoon
    small snacks
  • Eat fruits, vegetables and fiber (whole grains)

13
Atherosclerosis Prevention and ManagementStatins
  • Elevated cholesterol does not cause symptoms.
  • Cholesterol level determined by a blood test.
  • Lowering cholesterol lowers incidence of heart
    attacks.
  • Statins lower total cholesterol and bad
    cholesterol (LDL).
  • Some statins are available as generics are
    cheaper.
  • Statins are safe but report to your doctor any
    unusual symptoms.

14
Track your cholesterol levels
Date Total Cholesterol HDL LDL Triglycerides

15
Atherosclerosis Prevention and
ManagementSmoking cessation
  • Smoking is the single most preventable cause of
    death in USA.
  • One year after quitting the risk of heart disease
    drops by half.
  • Pulse rate blood pressure drop.
  • Quitting smoking saves money.
  • Nicotine replacements or medications are
    available.

Stroke
  • Devastating condition caused by
  • a bleed in the brain or
  • blockage of an artery in the brain
    (atherosclerosis) or
  • Clots formed elsewhere that travels to the brain
  • If it doesnt kill it can lead to permanent
    disability

Stroke
  • If recognized and treated early the risk of death
    or permanent disability is reduced

25
StrokeWarning signs
  • Sudden numbness or weakness in face, arm or leg
  • Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or
    understanding
  • Sudden problems seeing in one or both eyes

27
COPD
  • Chronic bronchitis and emphysema usually occur
    together
  • Bronchitis is chronic inflammation and scarring
of bronchial tubes which leads to mucus producing
    cough
  • Emphysema is destruction of tiny air sacs in the
lung resulting in less oxygen getting into the
blood which leads to shortness of breath

28
COPD(Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease)
  • Major risk factors
  • Smoking (90 of cases)
  • Genetics
  • Second hand smoke
  • Occupational exposure to pollutants
  • Recurrent childhood respiratory infections

29
COPD
  • No known cure
  • Quitting smoking when one has the disease can
    slow progression

31
Accidents
  • Unintended injuries are the fifth leading cause
    of death
  • All forms of accidental death rise sharply after
    65
  • Major issues
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Falls

32
AccidentsPrevention
  • Take a defensive driving course
  • Have your eyes checked regularly if still driving
  • Dont drink and drive
  • Beware of medications that can slow your reflexes

33
AccidentsPrevention
  • Accident-proof your home
  • Eliminate throw rugs slipping and tripping
  • Have everything you need at reachable level
  • dont climb on chairs
  • Make children put toys in proper place
  • Remove clutter
  • Beware of lamps and extension cords
  • Carbon monoxide and fire alarms
  • Emergency phone numbers handy

40
Influenza and Pneumonia
  • Pneumonia is an inflammation of the lung caused
by bacteria, viruses and other organisms.
  • In elderly patients it occurs when the immune
system is weakened or when suffering from other
    diseases.
  • In elderly patients flu and its complications,
including pneumonia can be life threatening.

41
Influenza
  • Because the virus changes all the time you MUST
get a flu shot every fall or winter.

42
Pneumonia
  • Everyone who reaches the age of 65 should be
    given Pneumovax.
  • This vaccine reduces the incidence of
complications such as meningitis and bacteremia.
  • Reduces mortality by 45.

  3. Stroke
  4. COPD
  5. Accidents
  6. Diabetes
  7. Influenza pneumonia
  8. Alzheimers disease
  9. Kidney disease
  10. Septicemia

44
Alzheimers Disease
  • A progressive disease that increasingly ravages
the brain, destroys the memory, intellect and
    dignity.
  • Can no longer learn new things, make judgments,
communicate, reason nor conduct daily activities.
  • As disease progresses people suffer behavioral
    changes such as anxiety, suspiciousness,
    delusions and hallucinations.
  • Patients lose the ability to care for themselves.

45
Alzheimers DiseaseIncidence
  • Over 5 million people have the disease.
  • Expect more cases as baby boomers age.
  • 1 in 8 people over 64
  • Almost half of people over 85

46
Alzheimers DiseaseRisk factors
  • Age
  • Family history 2 to 3 times more likely
  • Previous head injury and brain trauma
  • Others
  • Cardiovascular disease diabetes
  • High fat diet, high cholesterol obesity
  • Lack of exercise
  • High blood pressure

47
Alzheimers DiseaseManagement
  • We do not know how to prevent it.
  • No known treatment
  • Several drugs slow the progression of the disease
  • Exercise, diet and statins
  • Mental exercises keep the brain active

49
Kidney disease
  • The two most important causes are
  • DIABETES
  • HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE

50
  1. Heart disease

  9. Kidney disease
  10. Septicemia

51
Septicemia
  • A bacterial infection that begins in one area
then enters the blood stream and becomes
    widespread

52
SepticemiaRisk factors
  • Very young and very old
  • Weakened immune system
