Math Message Take a piece of paper. Use your
Pattern-Block Template to draw each pattern-block
shape. Write the name of each shape.

Exploration A Finding Relationships Involving Pattern Blocks Directions 1. Cover the larger shape with one kind of pattern block. 2. Use the Pattern-Block Template to draw the arrangement of the pattern blocks on the larger shape. 3. Fill in the numbers that express the relationship between the pattern block and the larger shape. Work cooperatively, but make your own record. Math Masters, page 241 Exploration B Naming Fractional Parts of Regions Math Masters, pages 315-316 Each partnership has one geoboard and several rubber bands. One partner makes a symmetrical shape with a rubber band. The other partner uses more rubber bands to divide the shape into 2, 3, or 4 equal parts. Record four of the shapes that can be divided into equal parts and show how they were divided. Exploration C Sorting Fact-Triangles 1. Remember what near doubles are, such as 3 4 and 8 9. 2. Partners short one set of Fact Triangles into doubles, near doubles, 10 sums, and other facts. Record the Fact Triangles on page 243. Practice facts triangles.

Great online symmetry lesson!
Cutting Symmetrical Shapes Use blank
paper. Cut out a circle. Cut out a
square. Cut out a triangle. Fold each shape
you cut out in half and test for
symmetry. Trim shapes if needed to make them
symmetrical. Try cutting folded paper to make
the shapes, too!

Two-Fisted Penny Addition for 17 and 18 Math
Masters, page 151
Start with 17 pennies. Grab a handful of the
pennies with one hand. Pick up the rest of the
pennies with the other hand. Record your numbers
on page 151.
Start with 18 pennies. Grab a handful of the
pennies with one hand. Pick up the rest of the
pennies with the other hand. Record your numbers
on page 151.
