How Does It Work?
  • Companies submit project proposals to UTD in
    consultation with UTDesign coordinators
  • Projects should be high level, suitable for
    senior engineering and computer science students,
    and should not contain sensitive information
  • UTDesign coordinators approve projects and
    match students to projects based on their
    interest and expertise
  • Students, their faculty advisor and company
    mentor(s) have a kickoff meeting to refine the
    project description, scope of work, and goals for
    the semester
  • Students then carry out the project with
    frequent interaction with the faculty advisor and
    company mentor

The Format
  • At the Kickoff meeting
  • Students are presented with the problem details
  • Objectives and deliverables are discussed
  • Students prepare a written project proposal that
    includes
  • Problem definition
  • Proposed solution approach
  • Project deliverables
  • Timeline for the solution
  • Budget

  • Students then implement the solution
  • Students prepare a final written report
  • Students deliver a final project presentation to
    the sponsoring company

The Role of The Company Mentor
  • The company mentor is vital to the success of the
    project. At a minimum, (S)he should
  • be the technical point of contact for the student
    team
  • be committed to the success of the project
  • participate in the kickoff meeting
  • be available during the semester to answer
    technical questions about the project
  • meet with the students one or more times during
    the semester to provide feedback and mid-course
    corrections
  • read and provide feedback to the proposal and the
    final report
  • attend the final student presentation

The Cost
  • Computer Science (CS) and Software Engineering
    projects are 1-semester
  • The cost to the company is 8k for fall 2011
  • Electrical Engineering (EE), Computer
    Engineering (CE), Telecommunications Engineering
    (TE), and Mechanical Engineering (ME) projects
    are 2-semester
  • The cost to the company is 13k for 2011-2012

Intellectual Property (IP)
  • Students and faculty mentor sign one-way NDAs
  • Any incidental IP resulting fro the project
    belongs entirely to the sponsoring company
