Minimum admission requirements forfreshman
applicants for CSU
  • A-G subject requirements (www.ucop.edu/doorways)
  • Eligibility index - GPA and SAT/ACT exams

Minimum admission requirements for freshman
applicants for UC
  • Must complete at least 11 of the 15 required
    a-g courses by the end of 11th grade
  • Must earn a 3.0 gpa but are no longer required to
    meet an eligibility index for consideration
  • Applicants are no longer required to submit SAT
    Subject Tests (though some majors may require a
    specific subject test such as Engineering or
    Science)

UC/CSU Academic Preparation
  • English - four years, college preparatory
  • History - U.S. History (1 year), world history (1
    year)
  • Math - algebra 1, geometry, algebra 2 (4 years
    recommended)
  • Science - two years of lab science (1 year of
    life science, 1 year of physical science) (UC
    recommend 3 years)

  • Foreign Language - 2 years of the same language
    (UC recommend 3 years)
  • Visual/Performing Arts - 1 year
  • College Prep Elective - 1 year course from a-g
    list (see exceptions)
  • Online courses not accepted for lab science or
    visual/performing art requirements

  • Maximum of 8 extra points allowed for approved
    honors or AP classes (maximum of 2 points from
    10th grade).
  • All of the above classes must be passed with
    semester grades of C or better

  • Where PGHS at 745 a.m.
  • Cost 20.00
  • Offered once a year (October)
  • Uses
  • Practice for the Reasoning Test (SAT 1)
  • Early indication of how one will do on the
    Reasoning Test
  • First step in the National Merit Scholarship
    Program for juniors
  • Students receive feedback on how to improve
    academically through Skills Insight program along
    with practice questions
  • Receive free access to My College QuickStart, a
    web-based career, major, and college exploration
    tool

Reasoning Test (SAT 1)
  • Given seven times each school year
  • Online registration at www.collegeboard.com
  • Fee is 49.00
  • Location of the test is at Seaside High School
  • Critical Reading/Math/Writing - max. score 800 x
    3 2400

ACT (American College Test)
  • Given six times each year
  • Hartnell College is the closest site for the six
    test dates
  • Online registration at www.actstudent.org
  • Fee is 49.50 w/ writing
  • Need to request writing portion on ACT
  • Max. score 36 w/o writing / 48 w/ writing
  • Uses Most colleges require either the SAT or the
  • ACT to help determine the eligibility of
    applicants.

Subject Test (SAT II)
  • There are tests on 21 different subjects from
    which to choose
  • Optional for the UC system, although some UC
    majors require exam to show competency in
    particular field (Private schools may require)
  • SAT IIs are given six times each year (With one
    exception, these are the same test dates as the
    SAT I). Not all tests are given on all dates
  • Fee is 33-55.00 depending on test choices
  • Online application at www.collegeboard.com

When To Take The Reasoning Test, ACT
and/or Subject Tests
  • Spring of junior year, can repeat exams Fall of
    senior year (CSU Oct./UC Dec. last test dates)
  • A student should check with individual college
    choices for last test date
  • Subject tests should be taken close to completing
    the class (e.g. AP World History)

College Admissions
  • Early Decision Earlier deadline, admitted
    students are contractually bound to attend.
    Student must withdraw all other applications.
    Student should be sure this is the top choice.
  • Early Action Deadline is after Early Decision,
    before Regular Decision and is not binding.
  • Rolling Admissions Student will be notified
    within a few weeks of submitting application.
    Bigger window of time to apply.

  • 3 Work closely with an academic advisor to
    develop a transfer plan
  • Develop, then follow, a plan but update it
    regularly
  • ASSIST (assist.org) and UCs Transfer Preparation
    Paths (universityofcalifornia.edu/admissions/trans
    fer/) are helpful but no substitute for personal
    academic advising
  • Review the information on the website of the
    UC/CSU campuses you are interested in
    transferring to.

Early Assessment Program
  • The program will help 11th grade students
    determine their readiness for college-level
    English and mathematics at the CSU
  • Math assessment - juniors need to answer the
    additional multiple-choice questions at the end
    of the mathematics CST (STAR) Alg. 2/Summative
    test
  • English assessment has two parts additional
    multiple-choice questions and an essay
