Title: Introduction to Earth Science

1
  • Introduction to Earth Science
  • Chapter 1

2
Earth Science
  • Study of the earth and of the universe around it.
  • Four branches
  • Geology
  • Oceanography
  • Meteorology
  • Astronomy

3
Astronomy
  • In astronomy we will study such topics as the sun
and other stars, planets and other objects in our
solar system, lunar phases, tides, and eclipses.

4
Meteorology
  • Here we will take a look at cloud and
precipitation types, storms such as hurricanes
and tornadoes, and fronts, pressure systems, and
    weather maps.

5
Oceanography
  • We will explore our four major oceans, the
properties of seawater, ocean floor and coastline
features, ocean sediments, and major ocean
    currents.

6
Geology
  • Here we tackle a variety of topics including
    minerals and rocks, volcanoes, earthquakes,
faults and folds, soils, erosion, mountains,
    plate tectonics, and geologic history.

7
Supports Ecology
  • Biosphere Layer of the earth where living
    things exist.
  • Geosphere Rocky portion of the earth
  • Hydrosphere Watery portion
  • Atmosphere Gaseous portion
  • Ecosystem a community of living and nonliving
    environment that interact.

8
Scientific Method
  • State a problem
  • Observe/Gather information
  • Hypothesis
  • Test hypothesis
  • Analyze
  • Conclude
  • Communicate

9
Two terms you should know!!
  • _______- explanation that is consistent with
repeated observations, can be tested and make
predictions, and is as simple as possible
  • ____- basic fact describing behavior of a natural
    phenomenon

10
Birth of the TheoryThe Big Bang
  • Theory hypothesis and observations supported by
the results of experimentation and observations.
  • Law Rule that correctly describes a natural
    phenomenon.

11
Light and the Doppler Effect
  • Isaac Newton Light spectrum
  • Rainbow red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet
  • Light travels in waves
  • Wavelength
  • Red has the longest
  • Violet has the shortest

12
Doppler Effect
  • Light moves away from the observer, wavelengths
are stretched out, shifting the light toward the
    red end of the spectrum.
  • Light moves toward the observer, wavelengths are
shortened, shifting the light toward the
    blue/violet end of the spectrum.
  • Doppler Effect Shift in wavelengths of energy
emitted by an energy source moving away from or
    toward an observer.
  • Video

13
Red Shift
  • Spectroscope instrument used to study starlight
to determine what elements are present in stars.
  • Prism that splits starlight into a spectrum of
    different colors and wavelengths.
  • Red shift indicates that almost all of the
galaxies in the universe are moving away from the
    earth.
  • Galaxies the furthest away are moving the
    fastest.
  • Conclusion the universe is expanding

14
Theory
  • Red Shift, explanation of the universe expanding
  • Big Bang idea that the universe was once
concentrated in a small volume and exploded,
producing elements making up the stars and
    planets...scattering them throughout space.
  • Continues to be tested.
