TAXONOMY
  • BRMS
  • 6th Science
  • Mrs. Bright

2
Standard 6-2.2
  • Recognize the hierarchical structure of the
    classification (taxonomy) of organisms (including
kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus,
    species).

3
What is taxonomy?
  • 1.Taxonomy is the study of how scientists
    classify organisms
  • 2.Organisms are living things.

4
Why classify?
Devil Cat
Cougar
Puma
Mountain Lion
Florida Panther
5
Who is Carolus Linnaeus?
  • 3.Carolus Linnaeus was a Swedish botanist
  • 4.He developed a 7-level (taxa) classification
system based on similarities of structures
    between organisms

6
5.The Seven Level System
  • Kingdom
  • Phylum
  • Class
  • Order
  • Family
  • Genus
  • Species
  • King
  • Phillip
  • Called
  • Oprah
  • For
  • Good
  • Spices

7
How does it work?
  • 6.There are 6 broad kingdoms divided into a
    series of levels.
  • 7. Every living thing that we know of fits into
    one of the six kingdoms
  • 8. Each level gets more specific as fewer
organisms fit into any one group
  • 9. The more classification levels an organism
shares with another, the more characteristics
    they have in common.

8
Scientific Name
  • 10. The scientific name of an organism is made up
of 2 parts the genus and species.
  • 11. It is written in italics (so you underline
    it) with the genus capitalized.

9
An animal is known by two names
  • 12. Canis lupus is the scientific name for a gray
    wolf.
  • 13. Canis is the genus name
  • 14. lupus is the species name

10
Canis lupus
11
Genus
  • 15. A genus consists of a group of closely
    related species
  • 16. Other animals in the Canis group include dogs
    and coyotes
  • 17. The genus name is always CAPITALIZED!!

12
Species...
  • 18. A species consists of animals that can mate
    and produce fertile offspring
  • 19. Only grey wolves are known as lupus.
  • 20. The species name is always lowercase (Canis
    lupus)

13
Binomial Nomenclature
  • 21. Bi means two
  • 22. Nomen means name
  • 23. Binomial nomenclature is a scientific
classification system using two names to identify
    an organism

14
Pinus taeda scientific name for a loblolly pine
tree.
15
The 6 Kingdoms
  • Protista
  • Fungi
  • Monerans
  • Bacteria
  • Plantae (plants)
  • Autotrophic
  • Animalia (animals)
  • No cell walls
  • Internal heterotrophs

16
KINGDOM
  • Most scientist support a 6 kingdom system.
  • Kingdoms include Plants, Animals, Fungi,
    Protists, Monerans, Bacteria.
  • Organisms are placed into kingdoms based on their
ability to make food and the number of cells in
    their body.

17
PHYLUM
  • In the Plant Kingdom, phyla are referred to as
    divisions.
  • Plants are divided into two phylum vascular and
    nonvascular.
  • Animals are divided into 35 phylum.
  • Animal phylum are divided into two groups
    vertebrates and invertebrates.

18
CLASS, ORDER, FAMILY
  • These levels become even more specific and will
include fewer organisms as they move down the
    levels.

19
GENUS
  • Contains closely related organisms
  • The genus is used as the first word in an
organisms scientific name and is capitalized.

20
SPECIES
  • Consists of all the organisms of the same type
who are able to breed and produce young of the
    same kind.
  • The species is used as the second word in an
organisms scientific name and is NOT capitalized.

21
ASSESSMENT
  • Look at the next slide and write the scientific
    name correctly for
  • 1.Humans
  • 2.Nine banded armadillo

22
Common Name Human Nine-Banded Armadillo
Kingdom Animalia Animalia
Phylum Chordata Chordata
Class Mammalia Mammalia
Order Primata Cingulata
Family Hominidae Dasypodidae
Genus Homo Dasypus
Species sapiens novemcinctus
23
ASSESSMENT Cont
  • Fill-in-the blank
  • The study of how scientists classify organisms is
    called 3.___.
  • Todays system uses 4.___ levels to classify
    organisms.
  • The levels from the broadest to the most specific
    are 5.___(name them all)
  • The more levels an organism shares with another
the more characteristics they have in 6.___.
  • The scientific name includes the 7.___ which is
8.__ and the 9.__ which is not capitalized.
  • Most scientists acknowledge 10.__ kingdoms.

24
ANSWERS
  • 1. Homo sapians
