  • 1. Classical music of the European tradition has
    often borrowed the melodies, styles and
    instruments of popular songs, and in this century
    the influence of low brow music, in particular
    Jazz, has been considerable.
  • The melodies, styles and instruments of popular
    songs have found their ways into / have been
    introduced into/ the musical elements of Jazz
    and low brow weighs heavily in the display of
    European music.

    scene, pop is its mass market manifestation
    and the divisions between black music and that
    favored by white audiences have been gradually
    broken down.

  • Chinese music has had a long history. As far back
    as Shang and Western Zhou dynasties, Chinese
    music was fairly developed. In the Spring and
    Autumn and Warring States periods, there were
    more than 80 different kinds of musical
  • Eighteen laments, a piece of ancient string music
    has a sentimental/ plaintive/melancholy melody.
  • Ambush on All Sides, a varied / and magnificent
    melody for the pipa, a plucked stringed
    instrument, is a vivid description of an ancient
  • Evening by a River in Spring, an instrumental
    music, depicts a fishing boat returning home at
    sunset and sings of the beauty of the land.

  • Peking opera is a purely Chinese opera form,
    which dates back to the year 1790.
  • That year four local opera troupes of Anhui
    Province came to Beijing on a performance tour on
    the order of the imperial court.
  • The tour was a hit and the troupes stayed.
  • The artists absorbed the tunes of the Hubei
    local opera and drew on the best of Kunqi, Qin
    qiang and Banzi and other local opera.

  • Peking opera can be divided into civil pieces
    and the martial ones. As to the former one, it
    is characterized by singing, and the latter is
    featured with acrobatics and stunts. Some operas
    are combination of both.
