The Chaibuxi National Forest Park
14
Drivie from Yichang, along No.325 Hubei
Provincial Highway, youll get to Chaibuxi after
3 hours. At the foot of Dawankou, there lie a lot
of Tujia holiday villages . If you want to
appreciate the wonderful scenery of Chaibuxi,
experience the Tujia custom, and taste the corn
wine, lets begin from here. Chaibuxi is a
typical grand canyon, which has an area of 60
square kilometers. It stretches from the east to
the west about 30 kilometers long and it is 1 to
3 kilometers wide. In 1996, it was ratified as
one of the China National Forest Parks.

16
Due to the endless geological movements, the
mountains here took all kinds of strange shapes
delighting tourist from home and abroad. Local
people describe it as Miles of deep gorge of
Chaibuxi, thousands of strange peaks the land of
paradise . The Park includes four scenery
areas Tanzikou, Dawankou, Jiaokou and
Duanshankou, together with a Neikou Bio-Reserve.
You can visit about 120 spots through 3 main tour
routes and enjoy many beautiful legends from
local people.
17
The charm of Chaibuxi lies in the gorges,
stone forests, cliffs and bluffs, clear waters
and flourishing forests. The wonderland is
famous for its primitive, steep, magic and
delicate scenery. The most attractive one is
the stone forest. The rocks stand in great
numbers, some like little boys, some like lovely
ladies, some like animals, all of which are in
different poses and expressions, some jumping,
some sitting, some gathering, some scattering.
Its a real enchanting view.
18
So the local people named them beautifully, such
as the fairy boy presents flowers ,
Generals Rock, Heaven sword , Guanyin
sitting on the lotus , Lovers Dating and so
on. But the most distinctive one is the Magic Pen
Peak in Dawankou. It looks like a giant brush pen
standing there for thousands of years. Rambling
among these mountains, the sheer peaks will give
you an infinite visual imagines.
19
The second unique ones are the
dangerous cliffs and bluffs. There are five
steepest cliffs whose stone steps are highly
hanging. Because the road to the top of Tizikou
cliff is too straight and perilous, its called
the ladder up to the sky . When you walk through
the extremely narrow road, dont look down to the
foot, otherwise, youll be scared not to go ahead
by the deep abyss under your feet.
20
The third wonderful one is the wild ancient
valley. Entering Dujiabao at the foot of valley,
youll be fascinated by its primitive, natural
and idyllic beauty. Watching the small bridges,
ancient Tujia houses, flowing waters, old trees
and flowers, listening to the birds singing, the
endless relax and happiness will make you forget
everything outside.
21
The virgin forest is the fourth wonder.
Walking deep into the forest, you can feast your
eyes on the vivid and lively picture of towering
trees, twining vines, chirping birds and blooming
flowers. You can see many rare and precious
species, including monkey, civet cat, leopard,
golden vulture , golden pheasant, antelope.
??
22
Precious Chinese medicinal herbs are found
everywhere. Here also live many treasured plants,
such as sawtooth oak, ginkgo, fir, and dove
tree--- the living fossil.

23
Chaibuxi is the inhabit region of the
Tujia Minority. Here, youll see the folk footed
houses, the traditional woven fabrics Xilan Kapu,

The Guchaoyin Cave
Passage 2
33
The Guchaoyin Scenic Spot is situated in
the Niejiahe Town of Yidu, which consists of the
Guchaoyin Cave, the rafting in the Yuyang River,
the villages for holidays ect. The Guchaoyin Cave
is the main spot, which is also called Xiejia
Cave. It is said that the army of Lizicheng, who
was the leader of the Peasants Revolting Army in
the late Ming Dynasty,
34
were beaten in a fight against the government
army, so they had to move to the southwest. When
they passed the Niejiahe Town, the local nobles
force, of which Xiejiaying was the head ,had a
fight with the Peasants Army. But after several
go-arounds, the Xiejiaying army weredefeated and
ran away to the Guchaoyin Cave which was easy to
defend, but hard to offend. The Peasants Army ran
after to the Mt. Kuang, seeing a cave in the
cliff, they found the cave was the one that if
one man guards the pass, ten thousand are unable
to get through. It was so difficult to attack
that they gave up and withdrew the droops,
leaving for the southwest.
35
About 200 years later, in 1883, in order to
recall the forefathers ruins, the ninth
generation of Xiejiaying, Xiehouzhi looked for
and visited the cave with his friends. Seeing the
cave, they were deeply moved, so they wrote some
words and odes, andlet stonemen carve them on the
walls of the cave. They were well-preserved, so
now you can still watch the vestige clearly.
36
The Guchaoyin Cave is a big calcareous
water-eroded cave which is about 530 million
years old.Divided into two parts, the cave stacks
up one after another, links one by one, and
connects with each other. No one knows its
deepth. In the upper cave, there is a giant
pillar about 29 meters high and 37.8 meters
around, which is the biggest one in China
national caves. On the walls in the cave, all
shapes of stalactites are hanging. Some look as
if they were mountains and waters, some seem to
be decorated with exotic flowers, some appear as
if they were umbrellas,
37
some are like beautiful ladies, some are like
lovely animals They look ever changing and
colorful by the blaze of shining lights. Its a
real feast for the eyes. Apart from the
stalactites, the cave also boasts the other four
attractive sights. The first one is the rare
glass fish. This kind of fish is pink, small,
exquisite and transparent as glass. According to
the analyse of the experts, owing to living in
the dark cave for long, and the mineral
substances in the water, the fish get sparkling
and crystal-clear.
38

The second is that there are a lot of clouds and
mists in the cave. Especially in summer and
autumn, you will see them slowly wreathe
outwards. Its really a paradise.
39
The third is the sound of the water like that of
the tide. Because the waters of the two parts of
the cave connects together, with a total drop of
50 meters, additionally, the current is rapid,
the sound of the water in the cave like a crush
of thunder or the tides rushing to the beach.
40
The last is an iron ladder connecting the
upper and lower parts. In the lower, you can
travel by boat and go through the biggest
underground steel corridor in the Three Gorges
Region to enjoy the underground natural landscape
paintings. In general, when you feel tired
in the modern cities, please come here. The green
waters, grand mountains, the magnetic idyllic
sights and the friendly local people will give
you a fresh experience, and let you relax and be
happy.

Ordovician Park
Passage 3
49
The Ordovician Park, also called Ordovician
Stone Forest, covers four small towns of Yidu
Wangjiafan, Panjiawan, Niejiahe and Wuyanquan.
After violent geological movement for millions
upon millions of years, several Ordovician stones
now stand there quietly with many various ancient
ocean creature fossils. These stones and fossils
tell us the evolution of lives on earth during
500 million years. Drive from Lucheng of
Yidu Town, you will spend about 2 hours getting
to Wangjiafan, where the stone forest of Luzhuxi
village was firstly discovered.
50
Along a narrow path, from the foot of Mt.
Jiangjun, after passing two farmers houses, you
will enter the Stone Forest Spot. The stones
standing on both sides are straight as pillars,
which are like two teams of army waiting for the
inspection. When you arrive at the flat roof of
the top of the mountain and look around, you will
see lines of stones in different shapes. Some of
the stones fall and some rise just like armies
and horses hiding in the jungle. There are many
stone alleys crossing each other in the Stone
Forest. Go through the alleys, youll feel as if
you are entering a large maze, not knowing the
directions.
51
There are unnumbered stone pillars, and some are
like folding screens, some are like giant
umbrellas, some are like jungles.Although
theres no soil on the stone pillars, there are
some evergreen plants twisting them. Opposite to
Luzhuxi is Maohutang Stone Forest. Leaving from
Luzhuxi and walking to its south about half an
hour, youll have the opportunity to see another
stone forest----Maohutang. The stone forest here
consists of several hills and its like a large
animal sculpture exhibition hall.
52
As you step into the stone forest, you can
find that the entire area is really a sea of
stone animal sculptures. Here youll find the
vivid embodiments of not only birds and beasts,
but also fish. When you go into the stone
forest, the first thing you will encounter is a
huge turtle.
53
It raises its head and looks forward as if it
were welcoming the guests coming. Walking ahead,
youll be amazed by the following scenes dragon
raising its head, golden cock flying, seals
playing with water, whales enjoying a trip The
most wonderful one is Earls Head Statue.
54
Its about five meters high, standing at the exit
of the down-hill. It has sunken eyes, straight
nose and curly hair. The face is really like a
Europe nobles. He smiles as if he were saying
good-bye to you. Besides the stone forest,
there lie abundant ancient ocean creature fossils
in Yidu Ordovician stratum. There are a lot of
nautiluses, sea lilies, ammonites,hornstones,
seashells and numerous nonamed molluscs, of which
the most representative is nautilus. Because it
not only has large numbers, but has long antenae
and hard crust, its one of the advanced life
forms.
55
???
If you stand on the Yidu Ordovician stratum, it
seems that you are standing on the bottom of the
sea 500 million years ago.
56
As you appreciate the stone forest and watch
those fossils, you will be moved deeply and feel
the human is so tiny and the life is so wonderful.
