Objectives
  • This course is aimed at providing business
    professionals a more advanced view of human
    resource management.
  • It covers changes in the HR environment,
    strategic implications of HRM, and new
    developments in major HRM functional areas.
  • Students will also learn to analyze HRM cases
    through benchmarking.

  • After completing this course, students will be

  • describe the factors that changed the nature of
    human resource management
  • explain why HR can be a source of competitive
    advantage
  • describe how HR can be more effectively designed
    in supporting business strategy
  • describe a high-commitment HRM system

    function, including job design, recruiting,
    selection, training, performance appraisal,
    compensation, and labor relations

Instruction Methods
  • This course will be conducted primarily in the
    classroom by presenting and discussing assigned
    reading materials.
  • Students will be responsible for journal article
    presentation and discussion under the lead of the
    instructor.
  • Students will need to preview and summarize
    weekly textbook reading materials.

  • In addition, students will be required to
    complete a case reports outside of the classroom.
  • In the process of writing these case reports,
    students will learn
  • how to diagnose organizational HR problems,
  • apply new HR thinking in analyzing the problems,
    and
  • suggest appropriate HR approach in solving these
    problems.

  • 30 - Mid-term examination

Grade Requirements Mid-term examination
  • Test questions will be mostly from assigned
    readings and the labor law
  • fill-in-the-blank
  • terminology definition questions.

presentation discussion
  • For presenters
  • a group of 23 students will present assigned
    readings and lead a discussion of the key points
    each week.
  • The group responsible for the presentation should
    email a completed Powerpoint file with a list of
    discussion questions to the instructor before
    midnight Tuesday.

  • For all students
  • A one-page reflection paper is due from all
    members at the beginning of each class.
  • In addition to a short summary, the reflection
    paper should include your thoughts on the reading
    materials, for example,
  • things I learned from the reading,
  • what you agree or disagree with the authors and
    why, etc.
  • Do not simply write a summary of the reading
    materials.

Grade Requirements Group project report
  • Students will cooperate on a case analysis report
    on the HR practices of a selected benchmark
    company.
  • In groups of 3, students will conduct a field
    research on an industry-leading company to find
    out how HR supports its success.
  • Research activities should include
  • information search,
  • interviews with key personnel and
  • field observations.

  • The output of this field research will be a
    10-page case report (font size 12, single
    spacing) which should include
  • a general description of the case company,
  • its competitive advantages,
  • how its HR is structured,
  • and how this HR structure supports the company in
    achieving its competitive advantages.
  • Students should also prepare an oral presentation
    of their case report in Powerpoint.
  • Please specify the contribution of each team
    member at the end of the case report.
