The Roadmap to World Class Project Controls
  • The key to successful projects is effective
    project controls
  • Effective project controls comes from a
structured approach to developing the planning
    culture
  • Adoption of industry best practices
  • Recruiting, training, mentoring personnel
  • Maintaining state of the art competencies at all
    levels

4
The Roadmap to World Class Project Controls
  • There has been no well defined career path for
project controls disciplines in the industry
  • Project controls cannot be easily learned on the
    job
  • Few companies offer training or mentoring
  • Nowhere is this more obvious than Forums, Groups,
    and Associations
  • Practitioners are crying out for help at all
    levels
  • International companies have recognized this
    industry shortcoming

5
  • Definition from Wikipedia
  • Project control begins early in the project with
planning and ends late in the project with
    post-implementation review, having a thorough
involvement of each step in the process. Each
project should be assessed for the appropriate
level of control needed too much control is too
time consuming ( too costly in implementation),
too little control is too costly (in results). If
control is not implemented correctly, the cost to
the business should be clarified in terms of
errors, fixes, and additional audit fees.
  • Control systems are needed for cost, risk,
    quality, communication, time, change,
    procurement, and human resources.
  • All of these together make up project controls.
Individually even the most proficient specialist
    will not be effective.

6
  • Project control is that element of a project that
keeps it on-track, on-time, and within budget.
