Superior Shoreline
  • Northland Area GIS Users Group
  • May 2, 2003

2
Objectives
  • Build on previous Bayfield County WI Coastal
Management projects by developing mechanisms to
    share information
  • In addition to planned educational outreach
meetings, develop an Internet-based means of
    information delivery
  • Use the power of imagery, as well as ancillary
information, as a tool to convey the importance
of our Lake Superior coastal resource.

3
Objectives
  • Our goal is to provide objective scientific
information to our community so that, together,
we may chart the best future for this valued
    resource.
  • Create a set of photographs to provide a baseline
for observing changes over time, whether from
natural forces such as erosion, or from
    development
  • Create archive to provide a ready source of
imagery that can useful for land use planning
    efforts, public meetings, educational displays,
and a multitude of other shoreline-related issues
    and events.

4
Why is this important?
  • Our shoreline is a valued natural heritage and a
    treasured resource
  • Parcels adjacent to Lake Superior may only
represent 1 of Bayfield Countys land area, but
contains 10 of private land values
  • Loss of property and improvements diminishes the
overall tax base and may increase public
    expenditures
  • There have been few attempts to quantify
shoreline hazards since the 1970s---The very
time period the coastline has experienced some of
    its greatest development activity !

5
Project Goals

    Bayfield County Lake Superior shoreline.
  • Leaf-off Photography
