  • In your lab-book on the left side of your Cornell
Notes page Define the following terms (found on
    page 344 of your text).
  • physical change
  • chemical change
  • product
  • reactant

Today's Objectives
  • Warm-Up
  • Vocabulary
  • Physical vs. Chemical Demos
  • Physical vs. Chemical Notes
  • Poster Activity
  • Rock Cycle Song/BrainPop
  • CPS Quiz
  • IPC Worksheet/Homework

9
Today's Demos
  • Physical changes vs. Chemical changes
  • The three little pigs (papers)
  • The Whoosh bottle

10
Physical VS Chemical Changes
  • Changes in matter are constantly occurring around
    us.
  • These changes are either physical or chemical
  • Eating is a great example of both. It involves
both physical (chewing) and chemical (digestion)
    changes

11
Physical VS Chemical Changes
  • Physical changes- form or appearance changes but
    composition stays the same
  • evaporation, condensation, freezing
  • Changes are to size, shape, state but the
chemical composition of the substance remains the
    same

12
Physical VS Chemical Changes
  • Chemical changes- change the chemical composition
    of the substance
  • burning changes wood to ash, smoke, gases
  • Chemical change involves chemical reactions-
molecular bonds are broken and reformed to create
    new substances reactants ? products
  • The new substances have different chemical
    properties than the original
  • Chemical changes are not easily reversed

13
Evidence of Chemical Change
14
Physical Chemical Changes Lab
  • Work with lab partner (groups of 2)
  • Listen to and read all directions before
beginning the lab WEAR SAFETY GLASSES
  • Qualitative data is descriptive, written
    information

    sample
  • Turn in lab report to class bin when complete

15

  • Create 1 poster showing chemical changes
  • See rubric and self-grade beforeturning in to bin

16
The Rock Cycle- natural changes
  • The rock cycle is an excellent naturally
occurring example of both physical and chemical
    changes.
  • BrainPop!
