173
The name Judges (shaphat)
- Those who act as law giver, judge, governor
(BDB 1047b 1b)
  • Those who liberate or deliver people first before
    ruling

4
Authorship Date
173

  • Between coronation of Saul (1043 BC) David's

5
Deuteronomy 71-4
When the LORD your God brings you into the land
you are entering to possess and drives out before
you many nations the Hittites, Girgashites,
Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and
Jebusites, seven nations larger and stronger than
you and when the LORD your God has delivered
them over to you and you have defeated them, then
you must destroy them totally.
6
Deuteronomy 71-4
Make no treaty with them, and show them no
mercy. Do not intermarry with them. Do not give
your daughters to their sons or take their
daughters for your sons, for they will turn your
sons away from following me to serve other gods,
and the LORD's anger will burn against you and
will quickly destroy you.

Downward Spiral of the Cycles
20
The Mystery of the Judges
174
  • We define the era of the Judges as starting with
the leadership of Moses and finishing with the
    crowning of Saul
  • 480 (from Exodus to Solomon's temple 1 Kings
    61)
  • - 40 (Saul's rule Acts 1311)
  • - 40 (David's rule 1 Kings 211)
    400 years
  • When the number of years that the Judges and
Israel's enemies rule are added up, it
significantly exceeds the expected value of 400
    years 510 yrs

21

Possible Solutions
174
  • Include the years of oppression by Israel's
enemies within the periods of leadership of the
    Judges
  • Overlap the leaderships of the Judges

25
What Do We Think?
174
  • It is clear from the Bible that the period of the
    Judges spans 400 years.
  • Closer study reveals that there are some
overlaps. For example, the judges Jephthah to
Samson obviously overlapped with the 40 years of
Philistine oppression and the years of priestly
    service of Eli and Samuel.

29
Conclusions from Findings
174
  • There is not enough biblical information to
determine the exact number of years that each
    judge ruled alone
  • The years that Israel fell under enemy rule are
    not always mentioned
  • Nevertheless, the Bible is accurate in its
    historical information

Religious Failure (1718)
Personal apostasy of Micah (ch. 17) - Idolatry
- Hiring a Levite pagan priest   Tribal
apostasy (ch. 18) - Levite blesses the selfish,
faithless migration plan of the Danites
- Syncretism
68
Moral Failure (1921)
  • Benjamites in Gibeah rape and kill a Levite's
    concubine

- 400,000 warriors of other 11 tribes destroy
26,100 Benjamites, including women and children.
- Benjamites kill everyone in Jabesh Gilead
except 400 virgins and steal another 200 virgins
at Shiloh as wives for the remaining 600
Benjamites to preserve their line.
69
The Last Verse is the Key Verse
In those days Israel had no king, everyone did as
he saw fit. (Judges 2125)
70
Apostasy's Bitter Fruits
  • political disintegration
  • tribal hostility
  • social chaos
  • increased immorality
  • disregard of the law
  • anarchy

71
Discussion QuestionHow is Our Day Like the
Judges Period?
  • Relativism Save the whales but kill humans
  • Secularism I don't let my religion affect my
    politics
  • Promiscuity What that leader does in his
bedroom is his business and not mine

72
Relativism
73
Applications
172
  • Rejecting God's lordship (incomplete obedience)
plants the seeds for failure (12).
  • Personal relative standards instead of God's
absolute standards lead to cycles of sin (316).
  • Replacing God's wisdom with personal whims leads
    to idolatry (1721).
