PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
  • The Cardiac Technology Program at the College of
Applied Medical Science in King Faisal University
is the pioneer program not only in the kingdom
but also in the Middle East.
  • It is a four-year course of study (142 credit
hours) followed by one year internship leading to
a Cardiac Technology Specialists, the first year
    is a general preparatory year.
  • Minimal GPA required for admission to Cardiac
Technology program is 3.75 or more.

8
JOB DESCRIPTION
  • Cardiac technologists assist physicians in
diagnosing and treating cardiac and vascular
    ailments.
  • Perform Echocardiography, resting ECG, stress
ECG, 24H Holter monitoring, 24H blood pressure
monitoring, assist in cardiac catheterization, or
    perform nuclear cardiac study
  • Monitor patients vital signs and hemodynamics.
  • Cardiac technologists schedule appointments.

9
JOB DESCRIPTION
  • Explain test procedures to the patients and
record any additional medical history the patient
    relates.
  • Review doctors interpretations and patient
    files.

PROGRAM SUBSPECIALTIES
  • Cardiac technologists will be able to select
between three areas of subspecialties in the
    fourth year-
  • Cardiac catheterization
  • Echocardiography
  • Nuclear cardiology.

11
PROGRAM SUBSPECIALTIES
  • Invasive Technology (cardiac catheterization).
  • It include diagnostic cardiac catheterization,
    interventional cardiac catheterization, pacemaker
    implantation and electrophysiological study.

12
Duties of the cardiac technologist who specialize
in invasive procedures
  • Preparing patients for cardiac catheterization,
sterilizing the area around the puncture and
administering local anesthesia to the site of
puncture and insertion of the catheter.
  • Assisting cardiologist in all cardiac
    catheterization procedures either diagnostic or
    interventional.
  • During the procedures, they monitor patients
blood pressure and heart rate with EKG equipment
and notify the physician if something appears to
    be wrong.
  • Preparing patients and assisting cardiologist
during the insertion of pacemakers or EPS study.

13
PROGRAM SUBSPECIALTIES
  • Non Invasive Technology
  • It include Echocardiography and Nuclear
    cardiology

14
Duties of the cardiac technologist who specialize
in non-invasive procedures
  • Selecting appropriate equipment settings, and
change the patients position as necessary.
  • Viewing the ultrasound image on a screen and
recording the image on either videotape or CD or
photograph it for interpretation and diagnosis by
    a physician.
  • Checking the image on the screen for subtle
differences between healthy and diseased areas,
decide which images to include in the report to
