Amateur Radio Working Group
  • The Amateur Radio Working Group (ARWG) is a
    multilateral working group chartered by the ISS
    Program Manager and reporting to the MIOCB, to
    coordinate the planning, development, integration
    and operation of amateur radio on ISS
  • AWRG Co-Chairs
  • NASA Ops Planning Amateur Radio Lead, ISS
    Program Office, Mission Integration Operations
    Office, Code OC7 (Mark Severance, N5XWF)
  • ARISS International Chairman (Frank Bauer,
    KA3HDO)
  • Membership will consist of representatives from
    the major ISS International Partner space
    agencies
  • CSA
  • Energia
  • ESA
  • NASA (ARWG Co-Chair, Mark Severance)
  • JAXA
  • Additional membership from the NASA Astronaut
    Office, a Cosmonaut cadre representative and a
    Houston Support Group ad-hoc representative

ARWG Related Board Structure

ARWG Responsibilites
  • ARWG will coordinate all amateur radio equipment
    integration and operations on ISS
  • NASA, IPs, SFPs, etc. specific use of amateur
    radio resources on ISS
  • Specifically
  • Implement requirements from educational outreach,
    crew and ARISS partners
  • Determine resource requirements
  • Manifest opportunities (launch service, mass,
    stowage)
  • Onboard resources (storage, power, crew operating
    time/complexity)
  • Maintain communications and coordinate with the
    appropriate IP technical organizations and ARISS
    for issue resolution
  • Specify crew training requirements for ISS ham
    equipment
  • Monitor the development of ISS ham radio
    hardware/software and coordinate adherence to
    flight qualification requirements and approved
    schedules

ARWG Start Up
  • Desire is to initiate the ARWG as soon as
    possible
  • Examples where ARWG coordination would be
    beneficial
  • Expansion of amateur radio capabilities into the
    Columbus module and other future modules
  • USRA/Space Adventures Space Flight Participant
    amateur radio activities coordination
  • CSA-Energia amateur radio activities for
    educational outreach
  • Usage of ham radio assets for payload operations
  • Initiate teleconference discussions as soon as
    all IP Representatives are designated
  • First ARWG face-to-face meeting scheduled for
    July, 2008 in Moscow

International Partner Space Agency
Representatives to the ARWG
  • We are formally requesting representatives be
    designated from CSA, ESA, JAXA and Energia to
    support the ARWG
  • The ideal IP representative would be
  • An employee of the International Partner Space
    Agency
  • An individual located in the IP Agencys ISS
    program support office or education office
  • Previous experience working with or familiarity
    with ARISS operations or similar educational
    outreach programs
  • Amateur radio experience is highly desirable but
    not required
