Title: Natural Resources

1
Natural Resources
  • Exploring Needs and Wants
  • Mr. Matthew Rodman
  • Science
  • Patria Mirabal Middle School (MS 324)
  • New York City, New York, USA

2
Focus
  • What makes some resources valuable?
  • What factors should be considered when looking at
    the value of a resource?

3
Resources
  • A resource is something that help perform a job.
  • There are many different types of resources.
  • Examples of resources humans use are friends,
sugar, books, the internet, television, air, etc.
  • Resources are classified by the job they help do.

4
Natural Resources
  • Environmental science is concerned with how
    humans use natural resources.
  • Natural resources are resources from the
    environment.
  • Natural resources are parts of the environment
that are necessary and useful for the survival of
    living things.

5
Types of Natural Resources
6
Renewable Resources
  • A renewable resource is any natural substance
that is recycled by nature and can never run out.
  • Renewable resources are replenished (renewed)
quickly and so humans never need to worry about
    running out of them.

7
Examples of Renewable Resources
  • Sunlight
  • Wind
  • Geothermal Heat
  • Water
  • Life (Biomass)

8
Nonrenewable Resources
  • A nonrenewable resource is a resource that can
only be used once and can run out.
  • Some nonrenewable resources can only be
replenished over millions of years, and are
    finite with regard to humans.

9
Examples of Nonrenewable Resources
  1. Coal
  2. Oil
  3. Natural Gas
  4. Metals and Gemstones
  5. Specific Species

10
Renewable versus Nonrenewable Resources
  • In general, renewable resources are considered
    more environmentally friendly.
  • Renewable resources are usually expensive in the
short term but may be cheaper in the long term
    (when nonrenewable resources become rarer).
  • The cost of resources is determined by the law of
    supply and demand.

11
Review
  • Label the following as a renewable or
    nonrenewable resource.
  • Corn
  • Diamonds
  • Oil
  • Coal
  • Sunlight
  • Wind
  • Wood
  • Copper
  • Rain
  • Humans

12
Questions
  • SUMMARIZE What are natural resources?
  • COMPARE What are differences between renewable
    and nonrenewable resources?
  • APPLY Why will the price of nonrenewable sources
of energy go up over time?
