Immigrants Versus Natives
  • I am an immigrant

My children my students are natives
3
Health Professions Education Building the
Bridge to Quality
  • Health professionals not adequately prepared
  • No foundations in informatics
  • Not educated in interdisciplinary teams
  • Expanding evidence bases

All health professionals should be educated to
deliver patient-centered care as members of an
interdisciplinary team, emphasizing evidence-based
practice, quality improvement approaches, and
informatics.
4
Health Professions Education Building the
Bridge to Quality
  • leaders across the professions to work together
on the crosscutting changes that must occur to
effect reform in clinical education and related
training environments, and that they should
carefully consider the cultural changes necessary
    to support such reform efforts.

In other words
  • If you don't like change, you're going to like
    irrelevance even less

Eric Shinseki US Army Chief of Staff 1999-2003
9
Informatics and Education Affecting Change
  • The natives are here
  • It is ok to be an immigrant
  • It's not just about what you know, it's knowing
how to make it work for you

Our Approach? Public Private Partnership
  • Johns Hopkins Nursing, Eclipsys Working to
  • Re-engineerNursing Curriculum with Clinical
    Information Technology
  • Baltimore, MD, and Boca Raton, FL Sept. 7, 2004
Underscoring the growing role that information
technology plays in the delivery of healthcare,
The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing
    (JHUSON) and Eclipsys Corporation (NASDAQECLP),
The Outcomes Company, have signed a letter of
intent to launch a unique academic partnership.
The goals of the partnership to increase the
    healthcare information technology competence of
nursing graduates and to design new ways of
    delivering safe and efficient healthcare
    utilizing healthcare information technology.

11
JHUSON Eclipsys Academic Partnership

12
Goal of Partnership
  • To teach students, as part of the curricula, to
    interact easily with healthcare information
technology, and learn to use a wealth of
    evidence-based, best-practices clinical content
    and knowledge management tools.
  • Create a clinical HIT laboratory
  • Immerse faculty and make HIT real
  • If you are not part of the future, you are
    history

Moving Recalcitrant Faculty into New Ways of
Doing
  • Not for the weak of heart or the thin-skinned

The person who grabs the cat by the tail learns
about 44 faster than the one just
watching. Mark Twain
15
Why Did We Do It?
  • It is the right thing to do
  • Students are actively engaged with HIT before
    they enter the workforce
  • We are able to influence design and better
    understand the constraints
  • Clinical HIT laboratory for scholarship faculty
    influence
  • Preparing tomorrows leaders
  • Getting the information into the hands of those
    who care
