• Preterite means past tense
• Preterite verbs deal with completed past action
• The ending tells who did the action.

• Just as -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an tell you
  that the action takes place in the present, -é,
  -aste, -ó, -amos, asteis, -aron, tell you that
  the action took place in the past.
