Title: Race your marbles to find a liquid

1
Race your marbles to find a liquids viscosity
  • By Enrique Figueroa

2
My Questions
  • What is viscosity?
  • What is the viscosity of detergent, oil and
    water?
  • How can I measure viscosity?

3
Hypothesis
  • I will find the viscosity of detergent, oil, and
    water.
  • I believe detergent will have the most viscosity,
then oil, and water will have the least
viscosity. I think this because detergent feels
thicker on my finger when its running down my
    finger.

4
Materials
  • I will need detergent, oil, water, 3 marbles,
three of the same size containers, and a timer.

5
Variables
  • These are things that can affect my experiment
  • How high I drop the marble.
  • The amounts of the liquid.
  • The sizes of the marbles.
  • The temperature of the liquid.

6
Procedure
  • I will use three 500ml water bottles and pour in
the same amount of detergent, oil, or water.
  • Next I will drop a marble in each container and
time how long it takes for the marbles to reach
the bottom. Then I will repeat this step three
times with all three liquids. I will do this to
make sure the results are accurate.
  • I will record the time in a table on a sheet of
    paper.
  • Finally I will compare my collected data.

7
Analysis
  • Viscosity means the resistance of a fluid or in
    everyday terms thickness.

8
Analysis
Time Deter-gent Oil Water
1 1.26sec 0.91sec 0.63sec
2 1.16sec 1.05sec 0.66sec
3 1.51sec 0.92sec 0.72sec
9
Analysis
  • The detergent needed 1.16 seconds to 1.51seconds.
  • The oil needed 0.91 seconds to 1.05 seconds.
  • The water needed 0.63 seconds to 0.78 seconds.
  • Detergent is the most viscous, oil is less
viscous, and water is the least viscous.

10
Analysis
This graph shows that my hypothesis is correct.
11
Conclusion
  • I learned that you can measure viscosity by
timing how long it takes a marble to travel
    through a fluid.
  • I also learned that detergent is thicker than oil
and water. Detergent is the most viscous because
when I timed the marble it took the longest to
reach the bottom. When I dropped the marble in
the water it reached the bottom in less then a
second. Water has the least viscosity.
