Sorting Activity
  • Place sorting trays at each table
  • Give each table a handful of rocks
  • Think about the different ways rocks are
    different
  • Choose as a group the way you would like to sort
    your rocks

Hard or Soft?
  • Take a penny and scratch or rub your rock
  • The rock is SOFTER if the color fades, dust comes
off or some of the rock falls off
  • The rock is HARDER if nothing really changes, and
    the color stays the same

The Art Lesson!
  • First choose a rock from your table.
  • Decide if you would like to make a pet rock or a
    paper weight.
  • Color and decorate your rock with your own
uniqueness and personality (using markers, paint,
    paper etc.)!!

9
Modifications
  • Special needs
  • Have their parents take them on a walk sometime
    before class.
  • Show various pictures of rocks before talking
about them, in order to give them an image of
    what we are talking about
  • Give them an idea of how to sort their rocks
instead of having to come up with it themselves
  • Gifted students
  • Go into further explanation about rocks, and the
    different kinds.
  • Sort a deck of cards as well (color, number, suit
    etc.)
  • Have the students write a paragraph describing
their rock and how they changed it
  • Or have the students make a book about the
process of this lesson. (finding the rocks,
reading about the different rocks, sorting and
    then creating their own rock)
