  • The whole class heard the forecaster predict a
hurricane. Some students made a list of how
their families prepared by purchasing extra
batteries and supplies. Our teacher thought
water and canned food were the most important
items to have on hand in a possible emergency.

5
  • We all listened to the weather updates
continuously. The predictions were for heavy
rains with up to 10 inches of rainfall leading to
rivers cresting by morning. We knew that winds
exceeding 100 miles per hour could spawn
tornadoes and cause millions of dollars in
    damages.

6
  • Major evacuations would be necessary to prevent
loss of life and keep severe injuries to a
minimum. The hurricanes course indicated it
should make landfall near Wilmington. We
understood that the best way to be safe in such
weather is to be knowledgeable about current
    conditions and to be prepared.
