18
What is Biology?
19
What do all living things have in common?
  • 1. Order
  • 2. Sensitivity
  • 3. Regulation
  • 4. Homeostasis
  • 5. Growth, Development and Reproduction

20
Lets Back up a Moment.
  • How did we obtain all of the information that we
    currently know about our world?

21
Science
  • Science is the state of knowing or having
    knowledge.
  • So, how do we get to know things?

22
Two Types of Reasoning
  1. Inductive Reasoning
  2. Deductive Reasoning

23
1. Inductive Reasoning
  • This is the way to discover general principles.
  • It starts with an observation(s) and leads to a
    possible explanation an hypothesis.
  • Sir Isaac Newton

24
2. Deductive Reasoning
  • These are conclusions made from general
    principles.
  • An example of deductive reasoning.
  • If I jump off this 4 story building I am going to
    fall to the earth.
  • This type of reasoning is how we make everyday
    decisions.

25
How do we go about establishing general
principles?
26
The Scientific Method
  • 1. Observation
  • 2. Hypothesisan idea that might explain the
observation(s) -- has to be testable
  • 3. Experiment
  • 4. Collect Data (Results)
  • 5. Conclusion
  • Does the conclusion support the hypothesis?
  • 6. Theory vs. Hypothesis

27
An Example
  • Observation I noticed that boys are better at
catching house flies than are girls.
  • Hypothesis Boys have quicker reflexes.
  • Experiment The ruler experiment
  • I NEED TWO VOLUNTEERS.

28
An Example (cont.)
  • Data or Results
  • (the lower values mean quicker responses)
  • Male 1 Female 1
  • 8.5cm 11.0cm
  • 7.1 8.9
  • 8.8 9.8
  • 8.0 10.8
  • 8.6 11.5
  • Mean 8.1cm Mean 10.4cm

29
An Example (cont.)
  • Data (cont.)
  • Males Females
  • Mean 7.9cm 9.8cm
  • How about the other room?
  • Males Females
  • Mean 10.4cm 8.0cm
