1
Modern Languages in the New Senior Secondary
School Structure
  • Anthony Adames
  • Head of Modern Languages Department

2
P.5 and P.6 Modern Languages
  • Students should have started learning their ML in
    either P.3 or P.4
  • The courses are developmental and were designed
    for continuous learning from P.3/4 ? S.3.
A Modern Language is compulsory for all
    P.1-S.3 students.
  • Students will undertake public examinations in
    all three languages.

3
International Recognition
  • The three examinations that will be offered to
    students are
  • French DELF A1 in S.1
  • Spanish DELE A1 in S.1
  • Japanese JLPT Level 4 in S.2
  • Students will have significant advantages in the
    future with these lifelong diplomas.

4
What are these examinations?
  • JLPT Level 4 Between 200 to 300 hrs of Japanese
(In HKU, most three year degree graduates have
    only JLPT Level 3 )
  • Both DELE and DELF will be offered to A2 in S.3.
By the end of their courses of study to S.6,
French and students should have sat DELF / DELE
B2 examinations and be eligible for direct
European University entry without a language exam
(like TOEFL for study in the US or IELTS for
    Australia.)

5
Support for our students
  • We have been selected to receive 2 French and
Spanish Assistants by the French Consulate due to
our record of excellent examination results in
    ML.
  • Students will have oral lessons and activities in
these languages with native-speakers. We are the
only school to offer this to Primary and
    Secondary students in Hong Kong.

6
Our schools reputation in ML
  • We have been described as Pioneers of Language
Teaching by the French Consulate General.
  • In a joint project, we have been assured today
that the relevant consulates will work together
to provide Teaching Assistants to our school for
French, Spanish and Japanese as an ANNUAL
allocation to act as a role model for other
    schools to follow.

7
An International Education for a Global Workforce
  • In 2009-2010, we will offer exchanges and study
tours for all French, Japanese and Spanish
    students.
  • We are in the process of establishing or have
sister school relationships in China, France,
Japan and Mexico with more to come.

8
Standards
  • We expect more and more from our P.5 and P.6
    students this year.
  • The NSS S.3?S.6 syllabus in French, Japanese and
Spanish is very challenging and as less than 1
of Hong Kong graduates will study NSS Modern
Languages, success in it will provide unbeatable
    advantages in the workplace.

9
