Title: ANALOG

1
ANALOG
  • Analog comes from the same root word as does
analogous meaning similar or the same

2
Similar
  • In analog recording the waveform of the recording
resembles or is similar or is analogous to the
    original sound source

3
Continuous
  • The waveform of an analog recording is unbroken.
That is, it is a continuous function that is made
up energy changes over time that resemble the
    waveform of the original sound.

4
2 Key Words
  • SIMILAR
  • CONTINUOUS

5
Analog Recording Tape
  • Base A thin film made of Mylar plastic
  • Magnetic Coating tiny magnets of ferric oxide
  • Top Coat The binder that adheres the magnetic
    particles to the base
  • Back Coat A carbon film on the reverse side of
the tape that reduces print through and static
    electricity

6
PRINT THROUGH
  • When one layer of magnetism is transferred to an
    adjacent layer
  • Occurs only in analog recording
  • Store tape tails out
  • Back Coat

7
Magnetic Energy
  • Stored on tape in tiny magnets in regions called
    domains
  • When magnets are random, flow of electrons (FLUX)
produce an overall energy transfer of zero
  • When we POLARIZE the domains, we force the
magnets into patterns that store information
    about the amount of energy

8
Analog Recorders
  • Feed Reel (Supply Reel)
  • Take-up Reel
  • Tape Transport the system that moves the tape
    through the machine
  • Tape moves left to right
  • Transport Commands stop, play, record, rewind,
    fast forward
  • TTL (Total Transport Logic)

9
Recorder Features
  • Capstan
  • Pinch Roller
  • Vari-Speed
  • Tension Levers
  • DC Servo Motor
  • Magnetic Heads
  • Standard Tape Speeds
  • 7 ½ IPS, 15 IPS, 30 IPS

10
ERP
  • Erase
  • Record
  • Playback

11
Selective Synchronization
  • Temporarily converting the record head to
    function as a playback head
  • Invented by Les Paul
  • Used only in overdubbing

12
FLUX
  • The flow of electrons in a magnetic field

RELUCTANCE
  • The resistance to the flow of electrons in a
    magnetic field

13
Head Configurations
  • Mono
  • Stereo
  • 4 Track
  • Etc. Track

14
OTHER TERMS
  • Dropout
  • Bias
  • Wow Flutter
  • Degaussing
  • Calibration
  • Head Alignment
  • Tape Saturation
  • Coercivity, Sensitivity, Retentivity
