Lesson 1 What is Heredity?

• Trait- a characteristic that makes one organism
  different from another
• Heredity- the process by which traits are passed
  from parents to offspring
• Gene- the basic unit of heredity

• Your inherited traits contain instructions for
  your growth and development.
• Each of your parents contribute half of your
  genes.
• Traits like hair color, eye color, and skin color
  are determined ONLY by heredity.

  intelligence, and your strength.

Lesson 2 What are Some Life Cycles of Plants?

• Photosynthesis- the process that plants use to
  make sugar
• Life Cycle- all the stages a living thing goes
  through

Important Information from Lesson 2 (page 98)

• The seed feeds the plant embryo until it is
  mature enough to make its own food.
• Ferns and mosses do not reproduce by seeds, they
  reproduce with spores.
• Some plants grow from tubers (storage stems),
  like potatoes and carrots.

Lesson 3 What are Some Life Cycles of Animals?

• Direct Development- a process in which an animal
  gets larger without going through a major body
  form change
• Metamorphosis- major changes in the body form
  during the life cycle of an animal.

Important Information from Lesson 3 (page 110)

• Most animals begin their life cycle as a
  fertilized egg.
• Many animals molt (shed skin) to allow for more
  room as their bodies grow, like snakes.
• Please be familiar with the life cycle of a
  butterfly and frog, as those two animals go
  through metamorphosis.
