Duties Responsibilities

• To complete all assigned tasks, every soldier
  in the patrol must do his job. Each soldier must
  accomplish his specific duties and
  responsibilities and be a part of the team.
  Element Leaders (SLs TLs) must do their part
  by supervising, rehearsing and spot checking in
  order to assist the PL.

• Patrol Leader (PL)
• Responsible for what the patrol does or fails to
  do. This includes tactical employment, training,
  administration, personnel management, and
  logistics. He does this by planning, making
  timely decisions, issuing orders, assigning
  tasks, and supervising patrol activities. He must
  know his men and how to employ the patrol's
  weapons. He is responsible for positioning and
  employing all assigned or attached crew-served
  weapons and employment of supporting weapons.

• The Patrol Leader Will
• Establish time schedule using the backwards
  planning process.
• Take the initiative to accomplish the mission in
  the absence of orders. Keeps higher informed by
  using periodic situation reports.
• Plan with the help of the PSG, SLs, and other
  key personnel (FO, attachment leaders). Receive
  and get briefed on status reports from the PSG
  and SLs and review patrol requirements based on
  the tactical plan.
• Stay abreast of the situation through
  coordinations with adjacent units and higher HQ,
  supervise, issue FRAGOs, and accomplish the
  mission.
• If needed, requests more support for his patrol
  from higher headquarters.
• Directs and assist the PSG in planning and
  coordinating the patrol's CSS effort and CASEVAC
  plan.
• Checks security, makes corrections, spot checks,
  and conducts rehearsals
• During execution, positions himself where he can
  influence the most critical task for mission
  accomplishment usually with the main effort
• Commands through his squad leaders using the
  intent of the two levels higher commanders.

• Platoon Sergeant (PSG)
• Senior NCO in the patrol and second in succession
  of command. Helps and advises the patrol leader,
  and leads the patrol in the patrol leader's
  absence. Supervises the patrol's administration,
  logistics, and maintenance. Prepares and issues
  paragraph 4 of the patrol OPORD.

• The Platoon Sergeant Will
• Organize and control the patrol CP IAW the unit
  SOP, patrol leader's guidance, and METT-TC
  factors.
• Receive Status from squad leaders on rations,
  water, and ammunition. Assists the PL with
  planning by informing him on the amount of ammo
  and pyro the platoon has for planning purposes.
• Direct the patrol medic and patrol aid-litter
  teams in moving casualties to the rear.
• Maintain patrol personnel status on men, weapons
  and equipment.
• Monitor the morale, discipline, and health of
  patrol members.
• Supervise task-organized elements of patrol
• Quartering parties.
• Security forces during withdrawals (Day or
  Night).
• Support elements during raids or attacks.
• Coordinate and supervise patrol re-supply
  operations and ensure that supplies are
  distributed IAW the PL's guidance and direction.
• Ensure that ammo/supplies/loads are properly and
  evenly distributed (a critical task during
  consolidation and reorganization).
• Ensures the casualty evacuation plan is complete
  and executed properly.

• The following checklist outlines APL's duties and
  responsibilities during specific actions
• Actions During Movements Halts
• Takes action necessary to facilitate movement.
• Supervises rear security during movement.
• Supervises/establishes/maintains security during
  halts.
• Knows the patrols location at all times!!!
• Performs additional tasks as required by the PL
  and assists in every way possible. Focuses on
  security and control of patrol.
• Actions at Danger Areas
• Directs positioning of near-side security
  (usually conducted by the trail squad or team).
• Ensures that the security squad has an over-watch
  element as they cross the road
• Maintains accountability, ensures everyone
  crosses and sends up report to the PL.

• Actions in the Objective Area
• Assists the PL with ORP occupation, control and
  security.
• Supervises / establishes / maintains security at
  ORP.
• Supervises the final preparation of weapons and
  equipment in the ORP per PL's guidance.
• Supervises the reorganization redistribution of
  ammo and equipment.
• Ensures accountability and status of personnel is
  maintained, to include WIAs and KlAs and
  establishes and controls the CCP
• Performs additional tasks assigned by the PL and
  reports status to PL.

• Actions in the Patrol Base
• Assists in patrol base occupation.
• Assists in establishing and adjusting the
  perimeter.
• Enforces security in the patrol base.
• Keeps movement and noise to a minimum.
• Supervises camouflage.
• Ensures sectors of fire are assigned.
• Ensures designated soldiers remain alert and in
  the proper uniform when on security
• Equipment is maintained in a high state of
  readiness.
• Requisitions supplies, water, ammo and supervises
  their distribution.

• Squad Leader (SL)
• Responsible for all that the squad does or fails
  to do. He is a tactical leader that leads by
  example.

• The Squad Leader will
• Control the maneuver of his squad and its rate
  and distribution of fire.
• Manage the logistical and administrative needs of
  his squad. Requests and issues ammunition, water,
  rations, and special equipment.
• Maintain equipment accountability.
• Submit status of MWE to the PSG, keep the PL /
  PSG informed on squad's status and submit ACE
  reports when required by the PSG.
• Direct the maintenance and inspection of the
  squad's weapons, clothing and equipment.

• The following checklist outlines the SLs duties
  and responsibilities during specific actions
• Actions throughout the Mission
• Obtains status report from TLs and submits
  reports to PL / PSG.
• Makes recommendations to the PL / PSG.
• Assists the PL with planning by war gaming
• Ensures tasks are accomplished by delegating
  tasks to TLs by establishing a priority of tasks
  IAW orders received from the PL.
• Uses initiative in the absence of orders.
• Follows the PL's plan and makes recommendations.
• Actions During Movement and at Halts
• Rotates heavy equipment and difficult duties.
• Ensures PL is notified when rest halts and water
  replenishment are required.
• Maintains proper movement techniques while
  monitoring route, pace, and azimuth.
• Prevents breaks in contact.
• Ensures subordinate leaders are disseminating
  information, assigning sectors of fire, and
  checks personnel at halts.

• Actions in the Objective Area
• Ensures special equipment has been prepared for
  actions at the objective.
• Maintains security and control during conduct of
  the assault.
• Obtains status reports from team leaders and
  ensures ammunition is redistributed and reports
  status to PL.
• Actions in the Patrol Base
• Ensures PB is occupied IAW the plan.
• Ensures that his sector of the PB is covered by
  interlocking fires makes final adjustments.
• LP/OP's sent out in front of assigned sector.
  (METT-TC dependent).
• Ensures priorities of work are being accomplished
  and reports accomplished priorities to the
  PL/PSG.
• Adheres to time schedule.

• Weapon Squad Leader (WSL)
• Responsible for all that the weapons squad does
  or fails to do. His duties are the same as the
  squad leader. Additionally, he controls the
  machine guns and MAWs in support of the patrol's
  mission. He advises the PL on employment of his
  squad.

• The Weapons Squad Leader will
• Supervises gun teams to ensure they follow
  priority of work and supervises maintenance of
  guns.
• Inspects gun teams for correct range cards,
  fighting positions, and understanding of fire
  plan.
• Assists PL in planning by rendering accurate
  status and inform the PL on how the SBF can best
  support the ground tactical plan.
• Rotates loads.
• Positions guns not attached to squads IAW the
  patrol SOP at halts and danger areas.
• Submits ACE report to PSG.
• Designates targets for each gun
• Gives additional fire commands to achieve maximum
  effectiveness of firepower
• Shifting fires.
• Alternates firing of guns
• Prevents lulls in fire
• Knows location of assault elements, security
  elements and prevents fratricide.

• Team Leader (TL)
• Controls the movement of his fire team and the
  rate and placement (distribution) of fire by
  leading from the front and using the proper
  commands and signals. Maintains accountability of
  his men, weapons and equipment. Ensures his
  soldiers maintain unit standards in all areas.

• Assists in control of the squad.

• Distributes ammo and special equipment.
• Performs all tasks given by the SL special
  instructions paragraph.

• Actions in the ORP
• Assists in the occupation of the ORP and assists
  in the supervision, establishment and maintenance
  of security.
• Supervises the final preparation of men, weapons,
  and equipment in the ORP as per the squad leader
  guidance.
• Assists in control of personnel departing and
  entering the ORP.
• Reorganizes perimeter after recon party departs
  and upon return of recon party, assists in the
  reorganization of personnel and redistribution of
  ammo and equipment ensures accountability of all
  personnel and equipment are maintained and
  disseminates PIR to his team.
• Maintains communications with higher headquarters
  and performs additional tasks as assigned by the
  SL.
• Actions in the Patrol Base
• Inspects the perimeter to ensure team has
  interlocking sectors of fire prepares team
  sector sketch.
• Enforces the priority of work and ensures it is
  properly accomplished.
• Performs additional tasks assigned by the SL and
  assist him in every way possible.

• Medic (Doc)
• Assists the PSG in directing aid and litter
  teams monitors the health and hygiene of the
  patrol.

• The Patrol Medic will
• Treat casualties and assists in their evacuation
  under the control of the PSG.
• Aid the PL/PSG in field hygiene matters, checks
  the health/physical condition of patrol members.
• Request Class VIII (medical) supplies through the
  PSG.
• Provide technical expertise supervision of CLS.
• Responsible for the disposal of human wastes.
• Carries out other tasks assigned by the PL/PSG.

• Radio Telephone Operator (RTO)
• Responsible for establishing and maintaining
  communications with higher headquarters and
  within the patrol. The RTO also serves as the
  enroute recorder and keeps a detailed patrol log.

• The RATELO must know the use and care of the
  radio to include
• Waterproofing for waterborne operations to
  include boat movements, swamp movements and
  stream crossings
• Presetting frequencies and establishing a
  communication SOP within the platoon for all
  radios.
• How to construct and erect the field-expedient
  antenna.
• Making a cheat sheet of OPSKEDs for all
  element leaders

• Forward Observer (FO)
• Assists the PL with planning indirect fires
  within the patrol and calls for and adjust fire
  as needed to support the ground tactical plan.

• The FO must know the use and care of the radio to
  include
• Waterproofing for waterborne operations to
  include boat movements, swamp movements and
  stream crossings
• Presetting frequencies and establishing a
  communication SOP within the platoon for all
  radios.
• How to construct and erect the field-expedient
  antenna.
• Planning fire support to cover movement and
  actions on the objective
• Prepare a target overlay (sterile)
• When coordinating for fire support, make request
  in the following sequence
• Target Description ( i.e. intersection, hilltop,
  NAI )
